Bildeserien er tatt i forbindelse med dokumentasjon av redskaper og objekter laget av smeden og gårdbruker Nils Engebretsen Bakken. Bildene er tatt 22.07.2011 på gården Bakken i Hodalen, Tolga, gnr. 65, bnr. 2. Dokumentasjonen ble utført av Norsk skogmuseum deltok O.T. Ljøstad (fotograf) og Ida Kristine Teien (fagkonsulent).

Datter av Ole Clausen, Ågot, f. 1820 giftet seg i 1840 med Nils Engebretsen, senere Bakken, fra Os. Nils ble født i 1811 og døde i 1894. I 1841 fikk han skjøte på gården Bakken av svigerfaren Ole Clausen for 200 spd. tillagt føderåd. Ågot og Nils fikk til sammen 9 barn. Nils Engebretsens foreldre var Engebret Olsen fra Os øvre og hustru Marit Nilsdatter fra Helenagarden på Hubækmoen. De måtte overlate Os øvre og ble boende på plassen Leren nær garden Strand i Os. Barna deres var evnerike både i boklige og praktiske kunnskaper.
Knapt voksen fikk han en bra start for sitt gode handlag ved at den kjente smeden og byggmesteren Jon Eriksen Berg fra Vangrøfta tok ham til seg som lærling. (Jon Eriksen Berg var bl.a. byggmester for Tolga kirke). Der kom han godt inn i smedkunsten og fortsatte for seg sjøl på plassen Leren til han ble gift og eier av Bakken i Hodalen.
Smedhandverket fulgte med, og særlig ble han en viden kjent børsemaker. Under utstilling på Røros fikk han førstepremie for ei børse, og flere av dem gikk til Sverige. Han laget også pistoler, og i ei dagbok etter ham er det oppført flere hundre skottvåpen.
Nils var også klokkemaker. Noen stor produksjon drev han visstnok ikke i det faget, men det var den vanlige typen stueklokker som rakk fra golv til tak med fodrial, pendel og loddsnorer.
Som «fabrikkmerke» på børser og klokker brukte han et hode og ei sprikende hand, risset sirlig inn og skulle være et symbol for tanken som kom fra hodet og handa som skulle utføre arbeidet. I den tida drev folk mye med årelating eller «kopping». Til å hakke opp for blodet, ble det brukt et instrument med ei ørlita øks drevet med fjør, og Nils laget mange slike instrumenter som ble spredt ut over bygdene.
Han gjorde seg sjølberget med verktøy, og støpte av messing forskjellige ting som høvrer til seletøy, dørvridere, knapper og spenner. Arbeidsdagen hans begynte kl. 4 og varte til langt ut på kvelden.
Sønnen Ole Nilsen (1841-1930) overtok gården fra Nils i 1882, og han fortsatte som smed, men ikke i den form og utstrekning som faren. Sønnen hadde kunder som kjøpte bruksartikler som hoppehyller, moseharker, låser, karjoler og sleder.
Nils Olsen senere Nils Bakken (1878-1961), overtok gården i 1907, og han holdt tradisjonen med smedhåndverk på gården. Særlig var han kjent for sine vakre motiver i jern. Etter Nils Bakkens tid har det i liten grad vært utført smedhåndverk på gården.

Serien SJF-F.011206-SJF-F.011362 inneholder bilder i hovedsak er tatt av redskaper som er oppbevart på smia i gården. I dag fungerer den gamle smia på gården som snekkerverksted. Enkelte gjenstander fra gårdens smeder er fortsatt oppbevart på gården. Betegnelsene på enkeltgjenstander er skrevet ut fra en håndskrevet liste som er oppbevart på gården, datert 21.05.1984.
