Dette fotografiet ble tatt i forbindelse med innspillinga av Norsk Skogbruksmuseums dokumentarfilm «Lågåsildfisket» i 1962-63. Filmen hadde premiere i 1964, og den har siden vært flittig brukt i museets formidling av ferskvannsfiskets historie.
Den 25. oktober 1962 hadde avisa Østlendingen dette oppslaget om Norsk Skogbruksmuseums produksjon av dokumentarfilm om lågåsildfisket:

Gamle fiskere og «ganekjerringer» gjør ypperlig jobb.
Fåberg.
Nå leker silda i Lågen! Og den leken vil Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i Elverum være med på. Ikke med not eller grunnhåv eller drivgarn, men med filmkamera. Skogbruksmuseet har tatt initiativet til å få laget en film om lågåsildfisket – mulighetene for det synger nå på siste verset etter de store utbygninger i Hunderfossen – og det er Landbruksdepartementets film- og billedkontor som står for produksjonen. Bak kamera finner vi i første rekke filmfotograf Gerhard Gundersen, som innkasserte en pen suksess med «Liv og husvær i skogen»,men denne gang har han leid med seg froskemannen Ole Kaarby fra Oslo – han overtar kameraet og stikker til bunns i Lågen når sildestimene koker i varpet. Filmen er beregnet å koste 60 000 kroner, forteller konservator Tore Fossum – ildsjelen i foretagendet – og en håper å ha den ferdig i løpet av neste år.
Gode «skudd» for både fiskere og filmfolk.
Mange av de eldre lågåsildfiskerne har vært i full sving foran filmkameraet i det siste. Og det er gjort gode fangster – både for fiskerne og filmfolkene. Det er tatt fangster fra 600 til 1 500 kilo i varpet, forteller Johan Reistadbakken, han har vært med når lågåsild lekt i Vingnesvika ved Lillehammer i mange år.
Vi har fått fine opptak på en lang rekke steder, fastslår konservator Fossum. Vi har fulgt silda fra Mjøsa og oppover Lågen. Før silda starter, holder den til ved Vingneslandet. Her foregår da et stort notfiske med sjønøter. Det er gjort flere opptak av det. Ved Øyra, på østsiden av Knuvelen – de eldste og mest kjente lågåsildplasser – har vi satt utgjerdstre og landingstre, det gir silda en «kvileplass» i strømmen, og det gir fiskerne gode notvarp. Her har vi også satt opp en «mælkrakk» og fått ypperlige opptak av fiske med mæler. Videre har kameraet fanget inn de viktigste redskaper som hører lågåsildfisket til, - det er på høy tid at det blir tatt hand om disse ting før mulighetene forsvinner i og med de store utbyggingsplaner i Lågen. Vi har gjort opptak av grunnhåven i bruk og vi er nettopp ferdige med flere nattopptak. Blant annet har vi «skutt inn» synkehåvfiske i Hølsauge, sildestangning med stanghåv og i nærheten her fikk vi også med bruk av stokkhåv. Det siste vi har fisket er drivgarnfiske, glimt fra livet i fiskebuene, saltmaling og «ganekjerringene» i sving med ganing av silda.
Mange «skuespillere» i sving.
Konservator Fossum har mange lovord til lågåsildfiskerne og dem som er knyttet til det. Mange burde vært nevnt, men i farten synes jeg det er grunn til å få med de gamle fiskerne – Magnus Hagen, Iver Sæther på Kolbergstuen. Hans Jørstad som handterer grunnhåven med stor dyktighet og Johan Rustad, som mestrer synkehåven. Brødrene Haugen spiller rollene når sildestangingen skal vises og Even Ensbybakken bruker stokkhåven. Under drivgarnfisket har Erik T. Dahl og Kristian Dahl vært i ilden. Og sist, men ikke minst, fortjener «ganekjerringene» en honnør – det er roller Agnes Sollien og Marta Dahl har fylt på en fin og riktig måte.
60 000 kroner for filmen.
Hvordan finansieres filmen?
Spørsmålet er på langt nær løst. Men saken er så viktig, at vi håper å finne forståelse for den – og midler til å gjennomføre den. Filmen får en spilletid på omkring 20 minutter, samme lengde som «Liv og husvær i skogen», og den kommer på minst 60 000 kroner. Gjennom inspektøren for ferskvannsfisket har vi hatt gleden å motta 15 000 kroner – det gjorde at vi kunne starte og dermed sikre opptakene fra lågåsildfisket i høst.
Manuskriptet?
Det endelige fagmanuskriptet er ikke ferdig i detalj. Sannsynligvis kommer tre menn til å stå bak det: Fiskeriinspektør Løkensgaard, som kontaktmann og faglig rådgiver, en lokal representant og Norsk Skogbruksmuseum. Det er viktig at saken blir kjørt solid opp, og det er hensikten at filmen skal følge opp hele fisket i Lågen. Under forutsetning av gunstigere værforhold og en økonomisk sikkerhet vil filmen være ferdig i løpet av neste år. Senere skal det skrives en fullstendig historie om Lågåsildfisket.
Gardkjerringene gråt!
Det er like mye eventyr hver gang, forsikret Ole Mathisen oss under filmopptakene, han svingte grunnhåven utenfor Øyra og halte inn kilovis av blinkende lågåsild. Jeg må være med på dette, det nytter ikke å sitte heime når silda leker!
Og det blir mer og mer av silda, fastslår Ole Reistadbakken og halte inn et vellykket varp i Vingnesvika. Han har vært med om varp på både 2 000 og 3 000 kg. lågåsild. Ikke rart om gardkjerringene gråt i gamle dager når det ene handkjerrelasset etter det andre ble dratt inn på tunet!
