Dette fotografiet ble tatt under arbeidet med å legge ut den såkalte Petershaglensa i fra Glommas østre bredd i 1984. Dette var en konstruksjon som i Elverum ble kalt ei «sløngelense», men som i fløtingslitteraturen oftest betegnes som «ledelense» eller «stryklense». Slike lenser besto av sammenlenkete stokker, som skulle flyte i vannskorpa og dermed lede løstømmer som kom fra ovenforliggende deler av vassdraget slik at det fløt videre uten å drive inn i bakevjer eller sette seg fast på steinskjær eller grunner i elva. Poenget med Petershaglensa var å lede tømmeret mot den vestre delen av elveløpet, for mellom bruene over Glomma i kommunesenteret i Elverum er den østre delen av elva grunn og har en del oppstikkende steinskjær. Supplert med to mindre nedenforliggende lenser – Østre og Vestre Brulense – skulle denne konstruksjonen sørge for at tømmeret strøk mellom andre og tredje brukar talt fra vest mot øst, uten å hekte seg fast i hindringer på elvebotnen eller sjølve brukarene.
Fra gammelt av ble ledelensene gjerne lagd av ferskt fløtingstømmer, fortrinnsvis stokker som hadde fått påhogd eller påboret «auger» (hull) ytterendene fordi de skulle «hankekjøres» (slepes i lange kjeder på snødekt underlag fra hogstteigene i skogen til fløtingsvassdraget). Gjennom disse «augene» ble det tredd vidjer (trebindsel), som rett og slett kunne hogges av ved hjelp av ei øks når fløtinga nærmet seg sluttfasen, slik at lensestokkene fulgte med det øvrige lensetømmeret videre nedover vassdraget. Seinere - etter at det ble slutt med å øye tømmer i forbindelse med framkjøring fra skogen - kjøpte Glomma fellesfløtingsforening lensetømmer som ble auget, og der augene ofte ble forsterket med beslag av bandjern. I denne perioden ble lensestokkene sammenføyd ved hjelp av korte jernkjettinger - «lensekoppel» - som ble tredd gjennom augene i stokkendene og låst ved at en jerntein (ei «nål») i den ene enden av kjettingen ble tredd gjennom en ring (ei «kause») i den andre enden. Lensestokkene skulle bindes sammen med toppendene i motstrøms og rotendene i medstrøms ende, for dette reduserte faren for at løstømmeret ble liggende langsmed lensa og øve unødig stort press på dette flytende stengselet. Fra gammelt av skal det ha vært vanlig at Prestegardslensa ble lagt mens det ennå var is på Glomma, da det gikk an å bruke hest til å dra stokkene i riktig posisjon. Petershaglensa lå imidlertid i den cirka 6 kilometer lange fløtingsroden mellom Søstuvika i Strandbygda og Hanstadholmen, der Fossum-karene lenge var sentrale aktører i fløtinga. De var også dyktige båtbyggere, og leverte farkoster som var svært stabile, både når de skulle ros gjennom fossene og når fløterne bøyde seg over båtripa for å binde sammen lensestokkene. Fossumbåtene gikk for å være lette å ro, og manøvrerbarheten ble enda bedre etter krigen, da Glomma fellesfløtingsforening investerte i flere påhengsmotorer. Kopling av lensestokker i strømmende vann var likevel tungt arbeid, og fløterne hadde gjerne tau og taljer som hjelpemidler i dette arbeidet.
Petershaglensa var ei av flere ledelenser arbeidslaget som hadde ansvar for at fløtingsvirket fløt gjennom den roden uten at det vaset seg sammen i hauger som det var arbeidskrevende og ikke helt ufarlig å løsne. Plasseringa av lensene var basert på erfaringskunnskap om strømdrag i elva ved vekslende vannføring, som kunne gjøre de nødvendig å justere lensene i løpet av sesongen. Et velutviklet system av ledelenser gjorde det mulig å begrense mannskapsstyrken. I etterkrigstida var det stort sett fem karer som arbeidet på elvestrekningen mellom Søstuvika og Hanstadholmen.
Torbjørn Otterstad var aktiv fløter helt til denne formet for tømmertransport ble avviklet i Glommavassdraget . Den 10. juni 1985 publiserte journalisten Johan Østby denne artikkelen i avisa Østlendingen:
«Slutt på tømmerdansen.
Våren, sier Torbjørn Otterstad fra Søstugrenda i Elverum. Våren blir ikke den samme når fløtinga blir borte. Torbjørn er 70 år og har fløtt i Glåma tilsammen 50 vårer. Første gang var så tidlig som i 1932. Ståle Sveen fra Sørskogbygda er 20 år har fløtt i to-tre uker. De har det felles at dette er siste gang de fløter. Når siste stokken farer utfor Skjefstadfossen om noen uker er begges fløterliv slutt. Ståle beklager det like mye som Torbjørn. For Torbjørn er det mest pensjonistlivet som venter etter årets fløting, selv om han også har jobbet i skogen hittil. For Ståle blir det enten landbruksskole på Jønsberg eller landbruksmekanikk i Ankerskogen. En epoke er slutt. Et spennende og forlokkende yrke går i graven.
Vår, varme og spenning
Hva har vært spesielt ved fløtingen? Selvsagt kan Torbjørn svare bedre på det enn Ståle, for han har et halvt århundres erfaring:
At yrket er spesielt har noe med våren å gjøre, sier Otterstad. Elvebrusen, bakken som blir grønn, varmen som kommer i lufta. Rammen omkring det hele. Så har du spenningen. Den hissende følelsen i båten eller på haugen som har fastnet mot en stein. Det var forresten enda mer pirrende før. Da man var ung. Da det ikke var påhengsmotor å sette på båten og en måtte stole på årer og armer alene. Før hadde man også større tømmer. Ikke bare slipvirket, men sagtømmerstokkene og endog kjempene som skulle skjæres til finér gikk i fløtinga før.
Men ellers er dagens fløtingstømmer litt farligere enn før også?
Ja, maskinkvistingen medfører at skarpkantede ender av kvist kan stå ut fra stammen, og får fløteren en slik mot leggen når stokken stryker forbi, er det både vondt og farlig. Fortidens håndkvistede og barkede tømmer var annerledes slik og gled mye lettere enn dagens.
Mye en skal lære
Det er mye en fløter skal lære?
Åja, bevares. Det finnes farer både uti vannet og for den som jobber på land. Det finnes innslag i fløterarbeidet – bl. a. utpå i båt – som en ikke bør være med på hvis en er litt nervøs av seg.
Det farligste i fløtingen skjer altså fra båt?
Ihverfall der det er fosser av betydning.
Er det et spesielt kameratskap i en fløtergjeng?
Det kan en nok si. Det er en trivelig tid på året. Du har det frie livet ute i en mektig natur. Du har spenningen ved jobben. Det kan være vått og kaldt og tungt også. Men det hører med. Før hadde vi ikke vadere slik vi har nå. Fløteren brukte ladder. Og han kunne vasse med vann til livet og mer enn det. Men det var ikke farlig. En tåler vårvannet. Det kan faktisk være rene medisinen. Det er rart det der.
Hva sier du til at fløtingen nå tar slutt?
Stusselig! Det er neppe noe å tjene på ny transportmåte heller. Og flere enn oss vil savne tømmerets gang i Glåma, sier Torbjørn Otterstad, som over mer enn et halvt århundre har sett fløtere komme og gå og er eldst og har vært med lengst av alle fløtere i Elverum.
Opplevelse for livet
Hva så med den yngste?
Søskenbarnet mitt, Per Helge Åsen, var med i fløtinga i fjor, forteller yngstemann Ståle Engen. Det han berettet derfra ga meg lyst til å prøve, så jeg søkte og fikk jobb. Men jeg visste jo at det ble første og siste året. Det var faktisk fordi det var siste gang jeg gjerne ville ha opplevelsen med meg.
Har du fått smak på fløterlivet og forstår du de gamles innstilling til det som noe mer enn et yrke?
Ja. Jeg har fått være med på alt. Det er en opplevelse jeg alltid vil ta med meg, sier Ståle, som kom hjem fra utført militærtjeneste i vinter og ellers arbeider i skogen. Og som har fått kjenne det særegne kameratskap i en fløtergjeng.
Hvordan vil så fullføringen av historiens siste fløting i Elverum arte seg?
Det kan bli i minste laget med vann, sier Torbjørn Otterstad. Heggblømingsflommen ser ut til å utebli denne gang. Og da kan det bli dårlig bør før siste stokken farer utfor Skjefstadfossen om to-tre uker. Den stokken som tar med seg en tradisjon ut av bygda vår.»

Dette er et av mange fotografier som ble tatt i forbindelse med det fagmiljøet på Norsk Skogbruksmuseum (fra 2003 Norsk Skogmuseum) kalte «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette prosjektet ble utviklet etter at museet var gjort kjent med at tømmerfløtinga i Norges største vassdrag skulle avvikles. Målet med prosjektet var å sikre mest mulig kildemateriale og dokumentasjon fra denne virksomheten, et materiale som deretter skulle brukes til å lage en publikasjon om virksomheten. Det var den da nyansatte historikeren ved museet – amanuensis Øivind Vestheim – som ble prosjektleder, og han samarbeidet tett med museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad. Disse to reiste mye langs vassdraget de siste par fløtingssesongene for å dokumentere virksomheten. Målet med prosjektet var å sikre mest mulig kildemateriale og dokumentasjon fra denne virksomheten, et materiale som deretter skulle brukes til å lage en publikasjon om virksomheten. Det var den da nyansatte historikeren ved museet – amanuensis Øivind Vestheim – som ble prosjektleder, og han samarbeidet tett med museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad. Disse to reiste mye langs vassdraget de siste par fløtingssesongene for å dokumentere virksomheten.
