Bruk
Makondeskulpturene lages av makonde som har utvandret fra Mozambik til Tanzania. Slike skulpturer har aldri vært brukt av makondene selv i deres daglige eller rituelle liv. Kunstformen har likevel røtter i deres tradisjoner og historier, men preges av nyskapning. Makondeskulpturer lages for salg, og de kjøpes til private samlinger, utstillinger, gallerier og utsalgssteder verden over. Bevegelse og svungne former kjennetegner skulpturene. Denne gjenstanden faller innenfor stilarten "ujamaa", som kjennetegnes av grupper av mennesker og dyr som slynger seg i hverandre. De ulike figurene er inspirert av personer og roller man omgås eller hører om til daglig. Ordet "ujamaa" er swahili og kan oversettes med samhold, fellessskap eller familie. Både navnet og skulpturene knyttes ofte til samhold i familien og til ideologien bak den tanzanianske politikken som ble utformet på slutten av 1960-tallet. Denne skulpturen er sannsynligvis laget på bestilling. Dr. Robert Yacobo Sangwani har æren for å ha startet opp "ujamaa"-stilen. Dr. Robert Yacobo Sangwani har utført utsmykkingsoppdrag i Tanzania og har vært representert på større utstillinger internasjonalt.- Afrika Øst-Afrika Tanzania Dar Es Salaam Dar-Es-Salaam
