Skrivebordet var en del av «det ibsenske familiehjem i Skien» ifølge Fylkesmuseet for Telemark og Grenlands årsberetning fra 1916-17 (side 25). Det betyr at skrivebordet sannsynligvis har fulgt familien Ibsen helt fra de bodde i Stockmanngården fra 1825. De tok det med seg til Altenburggården da de flyttet dit på høsten i 1830, og videre til lystgården Venstøp fra 1835. Da Venstøp kom på tvangsauksjon i 1843 må møbelet ha blitt med familien videre til Snipetorpgata 27.
Skrivepulten var en del av dødsboet etter Henrik Ibsens yngste bror, Ole Paus Ibsen. En gjenpart fra dette arveoppgjøret finnes i museets håndskriftsamling på nummer TGM-HD.3389 «Udlodning i forhenværende fyrvogter Ole Paus Ibsens dødsbo», datert 8.1.1918. Det var sønnen til den da avdøde Henrik Ibsen, Sigurd Ibsen og Hedvig Stousland (født Ibsen) som arvet tingene etter Ole Paus Ibsen, som var barnløs etter to ekteskap.
Antakeligvis var skrivepulten et viktig møbel da Ole Paus Ibsen administrerte sine forretninger i Brevik fra rundt 1870 til 1880, og i Skien fra 1880 til 1884. Pulten fikk også oppleve Ole Paus Ibsens økonomiske nedtur gjennom nye forretninger på Tjøme (Ormelet), fra 1884 til 1887. Den må ha fulgt med på flyttelasset til Kvitsøy, da Ole Paus Ibsen fikk seg en stilling der som fyrvokterassistent i 1887, og videre til gamlehjemmet i Stavern (Fredriksvern) i 1904.
Det var sannsynligvis ved denne pulten at Ole Paus Ibsen skrev sine brev til Henrik Ibsen i 1885 og 1887. Storebroren besvarte aldri henvendelsene.
