Detta frimärke är ytterligare ett som möter distanshandelns behov, avsett för tyngre försändelser.
Fågeln på frimärket - havsörnen - fäster också vår uppmärksamhet på miljön.
"Havsörnen är ett av de bästaexemplen på att människan inte bara kan orsaka miljöförstörning, utan
också kan uträtta fantastiska saker genoom aktiv miljöförbättring. Miljögifter i Östersjön raderade nästan
ut hela örnstammen. Men idag är fåglarna tillbaks, dels p g a att miljögifterna har minskat, dels genom
Projekt Havsörn". Det skriver författaren och journalisten Stefan Casta på motivbladet till Havsörn.
Ferdinand von Wright (1822 - 1906) målade förlagan till frimärket. Hans oljemålning "Hafsörn förtärande
sitt rof" valdes som förlaga till frimärket, i beskuret skick.
Von Wright, liksom hans två bröder, ägnade sig åt ornitologi, forskning och att illustrera naturvetenskapliga
verk. Det sistnämnda utvecklade han under några år kring 1840 i Sverige. Han kom från trakten kring Kuopio
i Finland. Bröderna hade under samma tid också konstnärliga uppdrag.
År 1858 begav han sig till Dresden för en studieresa, där hans intresse förstärktes för samspelet mellan fåglar
och deras miljö. Oljemålningen som är frimärkets förlaga ställdes ut samma år som den målades (1861) i
Finska Konstföreningens regi.
Von Wright fågelbilder fungerar också som zoologiska planscher, präglade som de är av hans intresse för ekologi.
