Llewellyn Lloyd föddes sommaren 1792 i en av Londons mer välbärgade aristokratfamiljer.
Den unge Lloyd hade inga intentioner att följa familjetraditionen med en framtid inom Londons bank- och finansvärld. Istället var det jakt och zoologi som helt fångade hans intresse.
Omkring 1820 kom Lloyd till Sverige, lockad av den för en engelsman exotiska naturen och den storviltjakt han här kunde bedriva på björn, varg och lo.
När han 1830 flyttade till trakterna av Vänersborg var det laxfisket i Göta älv som lockade och här kom han att hyra in sig på herrgårdarna Rånnum, Gäddebäck och Fredrikslund innan han slutligen flyttade in till Vänersborg.
Lloyd blev en mytomspunnen person känd för att ha dödat över 100 björnar, för sitt omfattande sportfiske och för sina många kvinnohistorier och utomäktenskapliga barn.
För den brittiska publiken var han en upptäcktsresande i Sverige och han publicerade ett stort antal gedigna rese-, jakt- och folklivsskildringar från dessa trakter.
I zoologiska frågor korresponderade han bland andra med Charles Darwin.
Han var far till den berömde afrikanske upptäcksresanden Charles John Andersson och det var också Lloyd som lärde den unge vänersborgaren Axel W Eriksson grunderna i zoologin – Eriksson som på 1880-talet kom att donera den omfattande fågelsamlingen från sydvästra Afrika till Vänersborgs museum.
Llewellyn Lloyd avled 1876 och hans grav finns vid Västra Tunhems kyrka.

Charles John Andersson, en av 1800-talets främsta upptäcktsresanden i Afrika, växte upp och fick sin skolning i Vänersborg. Han var en länk i den zoologiska forskartradition som kom att bli en starkt bidragande orsak till etablerandet av Vänersborgs museum.
Andersson föddes i Värmland 1827 som utomäktenskaplig son till den berömde brittiske storviltjägaren, zoologen och folklivsskildraren Llewellyn Lloyd (1792-1876) och torpardottern Brita Cajsa Andersdotter (1804-1892). Då Lloyd omkring 1830 flyttade till Vänersborg följde sonen med och sattes där i skola. Den främsta utbildningen fick Andersson emellertid av fadern som lärde honom grunderna i zoologin, med fokus på ornitologi, samt konserveringsteknik.
Genom familjekontakter i England lyckades Andersson få följa den brittiske läkaren och upptäcktsresanden Francis Galton (1822-1911) på dennes resa till Sydvästafrika, nuvarande Namibia, 1850. Galtons syfte var att nå den mytomspunna sjön Ngami i norra delen av dagens Botswana. Expeditionen nådde inte sitt mål. Galton återvände till England medan Andersson valde att stanna kvar. Efter ett par år i Kapstaden rustade han för en egen expedition och nådde Ngami 1853. Erfarenheterna från de båda expeditionerna presenterades i den kritikerrosade reseskildringen Lake Ngami som gavs ut i London 1856. Boken översattes även till svenska och tyska. Samma år besökte Andersson Europa och hemstaden Vänersborg.
När Andersson återvände till södra Afrika företog han en ny större expedition, denna gång mot norr och floden Okavango. Även denna resa kom att skildras i en reseberättelse – The Okavango River 1861. Vid samma tid kom Andersson att etablera en handelsstation i orten Otjimbingue i centrala delen av dagens Namibia. För att skydda sina handelsintressen i boskap och elfenben allierade han sig med hererofolket om orlam-namas. I den konflikt som senare blev känd som The Andersson War byggde Andersson upp en egen armé bestående av närmare 2 500 man.
Anderssons handelsstation i Otjimbingue kom emellertid att avvecklas vid mitten av 1860-talet. I ett försök att upprätta en handelsväg från norra Namibia till portugisiska Angola avled Charles John Andersson under en expedition vid den angolanska gränsen år 1867. Med på expeditionen var vänersborgaren Axel W Eriksson – nästa kapitel i den zooligiska forskningstradition som skulle leda fram till Vänersborgs museum tog sin början.
