- Ein oktant (av lat. octans, ‘⅛ av ein sirkel’) eller ein reflekterande kvadrant er eit geometrisk måleinstrument som først og fremst blir bruka i navigasjon. Namnet oktant kjem av at sjølve bogen på måleinstrumentet utgjer ein åttedels sirkel, og namnet reflekterande kvadrant viser til instrumentet brukar spegel for å doble den observerte vinkelen til ein fjerdedels sirkel. Oktantane kom i bruk som navigasjonsinstrument i 1730-åra og tok etterkvart over den rolla som kvadranten, og i mindre grad òg framleis jakobsstaven, hadde hatt tidlegare. Etter at måling av månevinklar kom i vanleg bruk kring 1760-åra, kom oktanten etterkvart til å tapa terreng for sekstanten, ettersom sekstantar kan måle vinklar på opp til 120 °, det vil seie 30 ° meir enn oktantar kan. I og med at oktantane var mykje billigare å framstille, fortsette likevel mange fiskefartøy og handelsfartøy å bruke oktantar til langt inn på 1800-talet (Kilde: wikipedia.no).
