Omkring år 650 e.Kr. ble to båter delt opp og lagt i en myr ved Kvalsund, Herøy på Sunnmøre. Det ble lagt rognekvister over båtene, og gropen ble gjenfylt med stein og torv, trolig i ledd i et ritual. Det minste fartøyet - Kvalsundfæringen - var vel 9 meter lang. Det største - Kvalsundskipet - var 18 meter. Originaldeler fra dette fartøyet er utstilt her, samt en modell i skala 1:6 av skipet. Kvalsundskipet var godt bevart, klinkbygget av eik med spant av furu. Skipet var forsterket med bunnplanke, en tidlig form for kjøl som gjorde det mulig å bygge bredere fartøy enn tidligere. Fartøyet ble rodd med 10 par årer, og hadde et mannskap på rundt 20 personer. Håndfaste bevis for seilføring mangler, men det store sideroret, sammen med bunnplanken, indikerer at Kvalsundskipet kunne seiles. Kvalsundskipet er en forløper for vikingtidens langsikp. Sammen med funn av flere store jernaldernaust langs norskekysten, indikerer det en hierarkisk samfunnsorganisering med sentralisering av makt
