Skogskoia og stallen var et sameie for seks gardbrukere i Fåberg. For gardene gav skogen store inntekter. Koia ble brukt av skogsarbeidere. Den har tre brisker, et bord, benker, en krakk og en liten ovn midt i rommet. Briskene hadde halm i bunnen. Ryggsekken eller tomme striesekker gjorde tjeneste som hodepute. Teppe brukte de vanligvis ikke.
Stallen har fire spiltau, og det hendte ofte at fire hester var med i lunning og kjøring.
Maten var brødskiver med margarin og sirup og kaffe. En sjelden gang laget de varm mat - kokte poteter og sluring (brød stekt i fleskefett). Etter 2. verdenskrig var det mulig å kjøpe hermetikk spesielt produsert for skogsarbeidere. Langt fra alle kunne velge i matfatet. Mange som ikke hadde jorda som leveveg, var skogsarbeidere. I og med at de var sesongarbeidere, kunne det gå lang tid mellom hvert oppgjør. En av de som arbeidet i skogen hele livet og bodde mye i koia, hadde sjelden med seg mat til skogs fordi det var lite og ingen ting å kjøpe for. Han hadde 12 personer å brødfø. En av guttungene hans kom av og til med brød og margarin. Det var mager og ensidig kost for en mann med hardt kroppsarbeid.
Etter endt arbeidsdag i skogen måtte seletøy og klær tørkes. Seletøyet hadde høyest prioritet.
Ellers måtte tømmerhoggeren bære vann til hesten, hogge og bære ved. Lyskildene i koia var talglys og etter hvert parafinlykt.
Avlagte dressjakker der ermene var avklipte, vadmelsbukse og vindjakke var vanlige bruksplagg i skogen. Om sommeren brukte mange dongeriklær - helst overall. Under siste krig kunne man kjøpe papirvester. De var vindtette og varme og spesielt gode under kjøring, men tålte ikke fuktighet. Underklærne og snøsokker var av ull. Før 2. verdenskrig brukte skogsarbeiderne pluggasko. Etter den tid kom gummistøvlene i bruk. Når mennene var hjemmefra, måtte de reparere klærne selv.
Guttunger i 13-14-årsalderen arbeidet alene i skogen og bodde i Turthaughytta. Av og til var koia full av karer, noen ganger var det bare en. Enkelte skogsarbeidere foretrakk å være helt alene. De tok bare høyst nødvendige småturer til bygda for å kjøpe mat og tobakk.
