Before the invention of color photography and before it became common, it was common practice to color photographs and films by hand. This was called to hand-coloring or hand-colouring. Sometimes the whole picture was colored and sometimes only selected parts was highlighted with color. For example could portraits get rosy cheeks and gold-plated jewelry.
Sometimes it can be difficult to determine whether it is a photograph that has been hand-colored or if it is a painted picture. The National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm, Sweden has quite a big collection of hand-colored photographs in the collection. Here are some examples of hand-colored photographs. Stereo images and lantern slides.
