Schablonmålning som teknik fanns redan under medeltiden. Då användes den för detaljer i form av blommor och stjärnor i kyrkovalven. Med metoden kunde både väggar, golv och andra ytor enkelt dekoreras med upprepningsmönster. Schablonmålningar på tapeter började användas vid början av 1800-talet och var mycket vanliga vid mitten av samma sekel. Upprepningsmönstret målades direkt på väggen, alternativt på papper eller väv som spänts upp på den. Schablonmallen kunde bestå av olika material, bland annat papper eller läder, och i denna skar man ut ett önskat mönster. Den färdiga schablonen placerades sedan på ytan som skulle dekoreras och färgen penslades över. En schablon per färg användes. Det finns många variationer av mönster inom schablonmåleriet och de skiljer sig mellan olika landskap. I museets samlingar finns ett 50-tal schablonmålade tapeter som ger en bild av hur länets schablonmåleri har sett ut med färger och mönsterkombinationer. Flera av mönstren är målade på ett vis som ger en diagonal uppbyggnad. En schablonmålad tapet kan ha sin botten struken med de allra flesta färger och i museets tapetsamling förekommer blått, gult, vitt och rosa. Själva mönstret har nyanser som avviker från bottenfärgen, ibland i kontrastrika kombinationer. När kraven på funktionalitet ökade under första hälften av 1900-talet försvann schablonmålningarna ut ur våra hus. Då blev det istället enfärgade, släta väggytor som tog över. Idag har tekniken fått en renässans och kan, liksom målad marmorering, återigen ses i flerfamiljshusens trappuppgångar.
