Tollmuseets beslagssamling rommer både klassiske og kreative metoder for smugling av sprit, tobakk, narkotika og andre varer. I tillegg til beslag av ulovlige kopivarer, truede plante- og dyrearter (CITES). Smugling har foregått på alle typer transportmidler, på personer, og skjult under dekke av andre type varer.
WASHINGTON-KONVENSJONEN - CITES
(CITES: Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species).
Konvensjonen trådte I kraft I 1975, for å regulere den internasjonale handelen med ville dyr og planter, som star i fare for å bli utryddet. CITES er en global avtale som berører alle land i verden, selv om de ikke har underskrevet. Per 1. mars 2016 har 182 av verdens 200 land underskrevet avtalen. Dette gjør CITES til en av de største naturmangfold-konvensjonene om biologisk mangfold, også kalt CBD.
Konvensjonen opererer med tre lister med ulike tiltak.
Liste I: Omfatter de mest truede artene. Stort sett totalforbud med inn- og utførsel.
Liste II: Omfatter de truede artene der den internasjonale handelen må begrenses.
Liste III: Arter som enkelte land ønsker å regulere handelen med.
Når det gjelder ivaretakelsen av regelverket, så sorterer det under Miljødirektoratet i Trondheim.
Tolletaten kontrollerer at regelverket blir fulgt.
Gjennom mange år har det blitt smuglet alt fra levende dyr til døde, og også gjenstander laget av truede dyrearter har forekommet i rikt monn.
Museet har beholdt både skilpaddeskall, ozelot-skinn, ulveskinn, slangeskinnsvesker og sko, lommebøker m.m., for å vise omfanget av smuglingen med disse varene.
