Capella byggdes 1929 vid Kalmar Varv (nr 302) till rederi Svensk Engelska Mineralolje AB och fick namnet Shell I. Hon byggdes som ett 90 tons torrlastfartyg för att kunna ta 300 oljefat. Fartyget trafikerade de första åren Stockholms skärgård med oljeprodukter därefter gick hon i Mälaren först på Västerås och senare på Eskilstuna med namnen "Västerås" respektive "Eskil".
1949 köptes fartyget av Marinen och blev utrustad med passiva undervattensmikrofoner, sonar, dyktuber och annan teknisk utrustning. Med namnen "Urd" eller " Capella" tjänstgjorde hon omväxlande som arbetsfartyg, specialfartyg, experimentfartyg och försöksfartyg under kalla krigets dagar. Hon var i marinens tjänst till1986, därefter registrerades fartyget som fritidsfartyg.
Fartyget är K-märkt av Statens maritima museer.
