- Alfred var yngre sønn av Anton Julius Johansens første ekteskap, født i Oslo, men fra 1904 levde hele sitt liv i Britisk Øst-Afrika. Som ung ble han utdannet på engelsk skole og lærte seg å snakke lokale språk, både kikuyu og mkamba i sammenheng med tilværelsen der familien befant seg. Alfred vervet seg til militærtjeneste på britisk side under første verdenskrig og ble gift med engelske Nora som hadde vokst opp i Syd-Afrika. Han fikk erfaring i ulike typer jordbruk under oppveksten der faren hadde en større plantasje i Mua Hills, rundt 50 km øst for Nairobi. Noen år etter krigen etablerte Alfred seg med kaffe- og sisalfarming i Makuyu distriktet, litt nord for Thika, der han ble medlem av Thika Sports Club og fikk samvær med andre skandinaver. På 1950-tallet da det ble politisk urolig kom Alfred Johansens vidtrekkende kunnskap og språkelige ferdigheter til nytte for administrasjonen i kampen mot Mau-Mau bevegelsen. Han skrev et 200 siders manus kalt "The Kenya I knew 1904-1963" om sine spesielle og interessante livserfaringer. Alfred og Nora fikk en sønn, Hugh, som også ble kaffefarmer og som fortsatt bor i Kenya.
