Forsbacka fick sitt första privilegium år 1650. Bruket inköptes då av borgsmästaren Johan Eskilsson i Söderhamn och rådmannen Peder Jakobsson Grubble i Gävle. De fick 1651 drottning Kristinas privilegium på anläggning av ytterligare en hammare. Enligt en del källor dröjde det till 1657 innan hammarna byggdes. Från och med 1695 är det belagt att bruket hade två hammare och fyra härdar med 1000 skeppspunds smide. 1872 övergick bruket i ett av bruksägarna bildat bolag, Forsbacka Järnverksaktiebolag. Samtliga aktier övergick 1916 i Nordiska Kullageraktiebolagets ägo. Finska Ovako lade ner tillverkningen 2017-02-28 och endast kulverket med sex anställda drivs vidare i ett nytt bolag.
