Dette fotografiet er hentet fra DSS-arkivet, der bildene i hovedsak er tatt av medarbeidere fra Skogdirektørens kontor (senere Direktoratet for statens skoger og Statskog SF) i samband med befaringsreiser i forvaltningsdistriktene. Negativsamlinga, med samme nummerering, er også overlatt til museet, men mye mangler og noe er dårlig bevart, blant annet fordi opptakene i hovedsak er gjort på nitratfilm. Dette bildet har ikke bevart originalnegativ. Det finnes også et større antall diaskopier, samt originale positivkopier utenfor katalogsystemet, men med samme originalnummerering fra DSS. Det fotografiske materialet fra den statlige skogetaten omfatter dessuten et betydelig antall nyere positivkopier som er registrert etter emner og personnavn hos DSS, uten egne nummer.
Interiør fra gammel lerkeskog på Øyer gard i Brandval. Bildet er tatt fra åpen slette med enkelte smågraner mot et parti med gammel lerk. En mann sto mellom lerketrærne og gav på den måten stammene en målestokk.
Kammerherre Marcus Giøe Rosenkrantz (1762-1838) kjøpte skog i Brandval i 1790, og i 1803 skal han ha gjort et forsøk med planting av lerketrær i denne skogen. Treet på fotografiet kan ha stammet fra dette kultiveringsforsøket. Rosenkrantz var jurist, embetsmann og politiker. Rosenkrantz giftet seg rikt og fikk på den måten hånd om store eiendommer. Den andre ektefellen, Maren Juel, var antakelig den rikeste enka i hele landet. Hun eide blant annet Stubljan i Aker og Borregård og Hafslund i Østfold. Etter Maren Juels død i 1815 måtte Rosenkrantz selge Borregård og Hafslund.
