«Vefsenelven er, som bekjendt, et af vort Lands betydeligere Vasdrag – ifølge Professor Brochs statistiske Aarbog det 10de i Rækken, regnet efter Nedslagsdistriktets Størrelse, der udgjør 5 100 km2, altsaa betydelig større end f. Ex. Nisserelven og Otteren. Før Trapperne anlagdes, kunde gaa op til Laxfossen, der er beliggende henved 30 km. fra Udløbet. Og selv saalangt formaaede kun en meget ringe Del af Laxen at gaa, idet Fiskens videre fremkomst i høi Grad hindredes ved Fosfjordfossen, der ligger omtrent 13 km. nedenfor Laxfossen, og oprindelig kun ved meget lave Vandstande var passabel for Laxen. Vistnok var der ved denne kun omtrent 3,5 n. høie Fos i Bygyndelsen af Sytti-Aarene for privat Regning anlagt en Laxetrappe; men denne lider af flere væsentlige Feil. Feil, der i meget høi Grad formindsker dens Effektivitet, ihvorvel det er sikkert nok, at enkelte Lax under lavere Vandstande gaa op ogsaa denne Vei. Men en endnu langt alvorligere Hindring frembyder Laxfossen, der har en samlet Faldhøide af ca. 16 m., hvoraf de nederste 10 m. meget bra, tildels lodret, medens den ovenfor liggende Del af Fossen er saa langstrakt, at Lax under lavere Vandstande antages at være istand til at passere dette Parti, ifald den først kunde komme på den nederste steile Del. Omtrent 10 km. ovenfor Laxfos ligger Fellingfossen, der har en Høide af ca. 4 m., og som rimeligvis under enkelte Vandstande vilde kunne passeres af Lax, men dog i ethvert Fald maa forudsees uden Laxetrappe at ville danne en meget betydelig Hindring for Opgangen. Ovenfor Fellingfossen er derimod paa en meget lang Strækning ingen Fos eller anden Hindring, der antages at ville kunne stanse Fiskens Gang, saa at den, naar de større Bielve medregnes, antagelig vilde faa en samlet tilgjængelig Elvestrækning af mere end halvandet Hundrede Kilometers Længde, hvilket er en længere Strækning, end Laxen gaar op i nogen anden norsk Elv, alene med Undtagelse af Tana-Elven.
.... Ved Laxfossen blev den største Del af Arbeidet paa den projekterede Trappe fuldført Vinteren 1886-87; dog blev det projekterede Bi-Indtag ikke udført, hvorhos en af de i Planen forudsatte 12 Kulper blev sløifet, saa at Trappen kom til kun at bestaa af 11 Kulper med tilhørende Render. Herved blev Faldet mellem hver Kulp forøget fra 0,80 til 0,87 á 0,89 m.
I September 1887 saaes under lav Vandstand 4 Lax i Trappen, hvoraf den ene i sammes aller øverste Parti, hvorfra den gik videre opover. Det fremgik heraf, baade at Trappen trods den temmelig steile Stigning er passabel, og at Laxen er villig til at benytte sig af den saaledes tilveiebragte Opgang. De senere Aars Erfaringer giver imidlertid Grund til Tvil om, hvorvidt Trappen dog ikke er vel steil, saa at Opgangen i altfor høi Grad vanskeliggjøres eller maaske helt umuliggjøres selv under Vandstande, der ikke er synderlig høie. Fuld Vished herom haves dog endnu ikke, idet man hidtil ikke med tilstrækkelig Omhyggelighed har anstillet Iagttagelser med Hensyn til Fiskens Gang i Trappen, og der saaledes endnu ikke haves tilstrækkelig Erfaring om Virkningerne af de senere end 1887 foretagne Arbeider sigtende til at regulere Vandtilgangen i Trappen. Et eller to af de følgende Aar har Trappen ogsaa været sterkt belemret med Stene, der under Flom og Isgang er løsbrudte fra Trappens Vægge, et Forhold, som man ved større Laxetrappe-Anlæg efter Anlæggets Udførelse. I Begyndelsen belemredes Trappen ogsaa af Tømmer, hvilken Ulempe imidlertid senere i alt Væsentligt er afhjulpet ved Opførelse af en Tømmerskjerm ved Trappens øvre Ende. Skulde fortsatte Iagttagelser vise, at Trappen i nogen længere Del af Sommeren er for strid paa Grund af for stor Vandmasse, bør Forholdet rettes ved Indlægning af et Par nye Kulper, hvorved man faar det i sin Magt at formindske Faldet mellem hver Kulp til 0,70 m., hvad der utvilsomt vil berede Laxen en let Opgang. [Fotnote: Dette er skeet Vinteren 1891-92, idet der i Trappens nedre Del er indlagt 3 nye Kulper.]
Da Overslaget over Arbeiderne i Laxfossen viste sig at være rundeligt, bestemte man sig allerede i Vinteren 1886-87 til samtidig med Udførelsen af de projekterede Arbeider i Fossens nederste Del tillige at udføre et ikke tidligere planlagt mindre Mineringsarbeide eller en liden selvstændig Laxetrappe bestaaende af 3 Kulper med tilhørende Render øverst oppe i Fossen hvor der er et Parti, som vistnok under lav Vandstand maa ansees passabelt, men hvis Passabilitet under lidt høiere Vandstand ialfald er tvilsom. Og det paafølgende Aar er endvidere et lignende Arbeide udført ved et Parti af Fossen, der ligger omtrent midt imellem den heromhandlede lille Trappe og den oprindelige projekterede store ved Fossens nederste steile Fald. Disse tvende mindre Trapper ved Laxfossens midtre og øverste Del er i det væsentlige konstruerede paa samme Maade som Hovedtrappen; dog er Stigningen noget svagere. De samlede Omkostninger ved Trapperne i Laxfossen har indtil Udgangen af 1890 udgjort Kr. 6 080,00 hvori indbefattet endel ikke ganske ubetydelige Reparationsarbeider, der fornødigedes som Følge af Beskadigelse af Trappen under en voldsom Isgang og Flom i Vaaren 1889, hvorved paa et Par Steder svære Klipblokke, der antagelig er blevne løsnede under Udmineringen af Render og Kulper, blev bortførte.
Foruden de ovenfor omhandlede Trapper i Fosjordfossen og Laxfossen er der endelig Vinteren 1887-88 og tildels senere udmineret en Laxetrappe ved den 10 km. ovenfor Laxfossen beliggende Fellingfos. ....»
I fiskeriinspektør A. Landmarks «Indberetning om hvad der til ferskvandsfiskeriernes fremme er udført og om disses tilstand i aarene 1899-1902» (side 23-24) rapporteres det om etablering av laksetrapper i Vefsnavassdraget:
«Sansen for gjennem laksetrapper at aabne adgang for laks til høiereliggende dele af vasdrag og derigjennem forøge udstrækningen af fiskens gydepladse samt indvinde nye for fiske, navnlig sportsfiske, tjenlige arealer, synes fremdeles at være i stigende, og der er derfor i den foreliggende periode udført forholdsvis mange arbeider af saadan art. Om disse skal her meddeles følgende forklaringer:
Med hensyn til de i tidligere beretninger oftere omtalte betydelige trapper i Vefsenelven er det allerede i beretningen for 1895-1896, side 21, oplyst, at det øverste parti af det største af disse anlæg, nemlig trappen ved Laksfossen, gjentagende havde været udsat for beskadigelser ved den voldsomme isgang, og at der derfor var reist spørgsmaal om ombygning af dette parti. En saadan blev iverksat vinteren 1899-1900 overensstemmende med en af mig i høsten 1899 udarbeidet plan. De fire øverste kulper med tilstødende render er herunder bleven sløifede og erstattede med fem nye kulper, der med tilhørende render er herunder bleven sløifede og erstattede med fem nye kulper, der med tilhørende render er udmineret i adskillig større afstand fra elven end det tilsvarende parti af den ældre trappe. Derhos er det nye parti øverst oppe forsynet med luge, hvorved vandet kan afstænges fra trappen, og vandmængden i nogen grad reguleres. Efterat der i de nærmest paafølgende aar er foretaget enkelte forholdsvis ubetydelige korrektioner, er Laksforstrappen, der for tiden er den største eksisterende virksomme laksetrappe i verden og som har en samlet længde af den over en fjerdedels kilometer, nu i fuldt effektiv stand. Denne trappe i forening med trapperne i Fosjordfossen og Fellingfossen har medført, at store elvestrækninger, der før henlaa omtrent værdiløse, er bleven bortleiede til sportsfiske, saavidt vides for et par tusend kroner aarligf. Den her nævnte omlægning af trappens øverste parti har medført en bekostning af ca. kr. 3 300,00, hvoraf en tredjedel er bevilget af statskassen.
Nogle kilometer ovenfor Fellingsfossen modtager Vefsenelven en fra syd kommende større bielv, Svenningdalselven, hvori der, efterat Laksfossen og Fellingsfossen er farbargjorte, gaar laks op til den saakaldte Storfos, beliggende ca. 4 km. ovenfor elvens sammenløb med hovedvasdraget. I denne fos, der har en faldhøide af 5,2 m., blev der vinteren 1902-1903 for regning af hr. A. B. Meidell anlagt en laksetrappe efter samme system, som er anvendt ved de øvrige trapper i Vefsenvasdraget, nemlig en række i fjeld udminerede kulper forbundne ved smalere render. Trappen i Storfos har i alt 8 kulper af 3 a 3,5 m. længde og 2,5 a 2,75 m. bredde, mellem hver kulp er der et fald af ca. 0,6 m. Selve trappen blev i det væsentlige fuldført i nævnte vinter; derimod gjenstod endnu en del foranstaltninger sigtende til at værge trappen mod at belemres af tømmer ofg at oversvømmes af altfor store vandmasser under høiere vandstand. Selve trappens kostende har udgjort ca. kr. 1 800,00, og de nævnte sikringsforanstaltninger mod tømmer og oversvømmelse er anslaaede til ca. kr. 350,00. Ovenfor trappen antages laksen nu at ville kunne gaa 15 a 18 km., og der er paa denne strækning gode gydepladse.»
SubjectLaksforsen i Vefsna, i Grane kommune på Helgeland. Denne fossen har et fall på om lag 16-17 meter, på et sted der elva, etter lenge å ha rent på hard granittgrunn, møter en bløtere bergart. Fossen ligger om lag 30 kilometer fra vassdragets utløp i Vefsenfjorden ved Mosjøen. På slutten av 1800-tallet engasjerte engelske kapitalister seg i sagbruks- og skogsdrift i området, og med denne virksomheten fulgte også pengesterke aktører som var opptatt av laksefiske. Opprinnelig kom ikke laksen høyere opp i Vefsna enn til den 3-4 meter høye Forsjordfossen, som ligger i nåværende Vefsn kommune. Der ble det i 1870-åra for privat regning utminert ei laksetrapp, som gjorde at fisken i hvert fall ved lav vannføring kunne gå opp til Laksforsen, 11 kilometer høyere oppe i vassdraget. I siste halvdel av 1880-åra ble det sprengt ut passasje til ei laksetrapp på vestsida av fossen (til høyre i dette bildet). Dette ble gjort i håp om at den lakseførende delen av Vefsna skulle kunne forlenges med ytterligere cirka 10 kilometer opp mot Fellingsforsen i Grane, som var det neste store hinderet for fiskens vandring. I nyere tid er laksetrappa stengt for å hindre at fiske som er bærere av flatormen Gyrodactylus salaris kommer seg videre oppover i vassdraget. Den nedre delen av vassdraget ble rotenonbehandlet i 2011 og 2012.
Dette fotografiet er tatt av [Valentin Wilhelm] Hartvig Huitfeldt-Kaas (1867-1941). Huitfeldt-Kaas var født i Kristiania. Han tok studenteksamen i 1889, og ble ansatt som konservator ved Universitetets zoologiske museum i 1894. Alt året etter ble han leder for de praktisk-vitenskapelige feltundersøkelsene som skulle fremme ferskvannsfisket. I den forbindelse hadde han også et studieopphold i Tyskland, der han satte seg inn i metoder for studier av ferskvannsplankton. Ellers arbeidet han med metode- og teoriutvikling knyttet til økonomisk utnytting av ferskvannsfiskeressursene. Han skrev også flere avhandlinger, blant annet om plankton i norske vann, om ferskvannsfiskenes innvandring og utbredelse i Norge, og om fiskeartene og fisket i Mjøsa. Doktorgradsavhandlinga hans handlet om «Studier over aldersforhold og veksttyper hos norske ferskvannsfisker» (1928). På sine mange embetsreiser rundt omkring i Norge hadde Huitfeldt-Kaas med seg kamera. Han var en dyktig fotograf, og tok bilder både i fiskeinnretninger i vassdragene og av landskapene han passerte på sine reiser. Direktoratet for vilt og ferskvannsfisk (seinere omdøpt til Direktoratet for naturforvaltning - DN) har overlatt Norsk Skogmuseum drøyt 300 fotografier etter Hartvig Huitfeldt-Kaas. Med samlinga fulgte det også ei notatbok med «Fortegnelse over fotografier». Denne boka har vært rettesnor ved museets første digitale registrering av materialet.
