Andreas Tandberg Gløersen trengte frø til skogreising, og fortrinnsvis norsk frø, for han hadde dårlige erfaringer med tysk handelsfrø. Han mente imidlertid at det ville være riktigst å etablere skogfrøproduksjon på Østlandet, hvor det var mye mer barskog, og følgelig lettere tilgang på kongler. Han greide imidlertid ikke å overtale noen av sine kolleger på Østlandet til å bygge et slikt anlegg, og etter et besøk av den tyske skogkulturpioneren Friedrich Nobbe, gikk han i gang sjøl. At anlegget ble plassert på Voss hadde sammenheng med at dette var den vestlandsbygda som hadde mest barskog. Her var det til og med en del gran. Anlegget ble først reist på Gløersens egen eiendom, Grovendal, som lå like utenfor Vossevangen, langs hovedvegen mot Sogn. Etter snaut 20 års drift kom imidlertid klengstua på kollisjonskurs med en av Gløersens andre store idéer: Bergensbanens trasé ble lagt akkurat der bygningen sto. Dermed måtte Gløersens etterfølger, Barthold Henrik Vonen, få flyttet anlegget. Han valgte ei tomt på eiendommen Lekves grunn, på sjølve Vossevangen, hvor bygningen ble gjenoppført i 1900-01. Dette bildet er etter alt å dømme tatt etter flyttinga, sannsynligvis så seint som i 1967, og viser altså klengstua slik den så ut etter flyttinga. Anlegget ble for øvrig overdratt til Bergens Skogselskab i 1904 og drevet videre av denne organisasjonen inntil 1930. Da overtok Vestlandets forstlige forsøksstasjon ansvaret for skogfrøproduksjonen på Vestlandet. De la ned klengstua på Voss og innredet i første omgang et klenganlegg i et gammelt våningshus på Ekhaug planteskole i Os utenfor Bergen. Omkring 1960 ble virksomheten flyttet til et tilbygg til forskningsstasjonen den gang nye kontorbygg på Stend. Klengstua på Voss, var sammen med et noe enklere anlegg forstassistent Carl Henrich Nieuwejaar og forstmester Wilhelm August Kiønig fikk bygd på Storjord i Saltdalen på samme tid, første klenganlegg i Norge. Før forekom det bare sporadisk bruk av enkle solbenker til skogfrøproduksjon.
Da konservator Tore Fossum ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i samarbeid med frøverkstbestyrer Ch. D. Kohmann i 1964 begynte å undersøke om det fantes ei klengstue et eller annet sted i Norge som kunne flyttes til museet, fikk han følgende svar fra forstkandidat Knut Nedkvitne, som tilhørte stundentkullet som ble uteksaminert fra skogavdelingen ved Norges landbrukshøgskole før Tore Fossums kull:
«Takk for sist. Eg har no fått nokre fleire opplysningar om den gamle klengstova som står her på Voss. Det er ein institusjon som heiter Voss sjukestall som eig huset, og det vert administrert av distriktsveterinæren. Distriktsveterinæren som er her no heiter Tollef Larssen.Huset er mykje ominnreidt etter at det vart slutta med klenging der. I fyrste høgda er det sjukestall, i andre høgda er det bustad for ein huslyd og i tridje høgda er der hyblar. Det er eit tolleg godt hus og det vert truleg heller dyrt for Skogbruksmuseet dersom de vil overta huset og flytta det til Elverum. Dersom du vil komma hit til Voss for å sjå på huset, så har eg nå fått nyklar til huset og kan visa deg omkring der. Kjem du til ei tid som høver for distriktsveterinæren, så vil han og vera med.»

Denne klengstua ble reist etter initiativ fra Andreas Tandberg Gløersen, som var forstmester på Vestlandet, en landsdel der det var lite barskog i andre halvdel av 1800-tallet. Bygningen hadde to etasjer, men i og med det skrånende terrenget kunne det fra ei side (som her) se ut som om den kun hadde en etasje. Ytterveggene var kledd med liggende panel, etter vestnorsk tradisjon. Bortsett fra klengrommet, som var laftet, var bygningen oppført i bordkledd bindingsverk. Den hadde krysspostvinduer i begge etasjer og i røstet (loftsetasjen). I første etasje, mot vegen fotografiet er tatt fra, var det en portåpning med to dørblad. Like ved denne porten gikk det ei trapp opp til en platting foran ei dør inn til 2. etasje. Bygningen later til å ha vært tilbygd i bredden, på den langsida som var skjult fra det stedet der fotografen gjorde dette opptaket. Taket var tekket med lappeskifer. Et tett, høyt plankegjerde langs vegen hindrer innsyn i hage eller gårdsrom. Vi aner imidlertid et lite, bordkledd skur med pulttak helt til høyre i bildet. Bak den ser vi et større tak, trolig fra et hus på en naboeiendom. På bakkekammen til venstre for hovedhuset på dette bildet sto ei lita gruppe av grantrær.
Dette fotografiet ble funnet i Norsk Skogmuseums tematisk ordnete arkiv over fotografiske kopier i småformat. Årstallet 1967 og tallkombinasjonen 620/67 er innskrevet på baksida av kopien. Dersom dette er opptaksåret, er det sannsynlig at Tore Fossum har tatt bildet, for han var pån studietur i Hordaland og Sogn og Fjordane i 1967.
