Dette fotografiet er fra den offisielle åpningen av Norsk Skogbruksmuseums nye museumsbygg den 22. juni 1971. Idéen om å få reist et utstillings-, magasin-, kontor- og verkstedbygg i ildfaste materialer ble lansert allerede tidlig i 1960-åra, da museet fikk overta klokkergarden Fossum på østsida av Glomma, og da Tore Fossum ble konservator og Hans Th. Kiær ble styreleder ved Skogbruksmuseet. Finansierings- og planleggingsarbeidet tok likevel tid. I 1965-66 ble det avviklet en arkitektkonkurranse, der det kom inn 56 forslag. Arkitektene Carl Wilhelm Duus, Einar Fiane og Terje Thorstensen fra Arendal ble kåret til det beste av fem premierte utkast. De ble dermed engasjert som arkitekter for nybygget. Byggekomitéen besto av styreleder Hans Th. Kiær, advokat Finn Krogh og konservator Tore Fossum. Arkitektene og byggekomitéen besøkte store, nybygde museumsanlegg i Norden, og de knyttet en del tekniske konsulenter til prosjektet. Først i 1969 var arbeidet med finansiering kommet så langt at beslutningen om igangsetting av det praktiske byggearbeidet kunne fattes. Entreprenørselskapet Martin M. Bakken i Eleverum vant anbudskonkurransen. Underentreprenører var elektrikerfirmaet O. Svensgaard og rørlegger Sigmund Nordbrenden. Ifølge kontrakten skulle bygningen på 40 X 40 meter i tre plan med en mindre kontorfløy i to plan ferdigstilles i løpet av ett år. Denne tidsplanen holdt. Kranseskål ble holdt like før jul i 1969, og den 25. april 1970 var bygningen klar for innflytting. Administrasjonen flyttet over i nybygget i oktober samme år. Jostein K. Nysæther ble ansatt som utstillingskonsulent, og sammen med Tore Fossum og etnologistudentene Åsmund Eknæs, Tora Holmen og Geir Hovensjø startet han arbeidet med å bygge skogbruksutstilling i nybyggets førsteetasje. Råbygget var kalkulert til 3, 5 millioner. I tillegg anslo man at det ville koste en million å opparbeide parkeringsplasser og parkanlegg omkring bygningen. Her var det Magne Brun og Kjellaug Eik fra Institutt for hagekunst ved Norges landbrukshøgskole på Ås som hadde formgiveransvaret i samråd med arkitekt Terje Thorstensen. Anders Trovåg og Ottar Gammelmo hadde hovedansvaret for de praktiske arbeidene utendørs. Jostein Nysæther hadde idéen om et skulpturelt blikkfang med fem cirka 30 meter høye granstammer foran bygningen. Disse stammene ble levert av Løiten almenning. Basisutstillingene om jakt, fangst og ferskvannsfiske ble bygd i løpet av de to sesongene som fulgte etter innvielsen i 1971, primært i vinterhalvåret. Nybygget og et stadig bredere utstillingstilbud stimulerte også til økt besøk. I 1971, da skogbruksutstillingen sto ferdig i nybygget, registrerte man cirka 15 000 museumsgjester, noe som var en tredobling av tallet fra foregående år. I 1972, da jakt- og fangstutstillingen kom på plass, økte besøkstallet til 36 000. Med fiskeavdelingen på plass i 1973 registrerte museet drøyt 52 000 gjester.

Omvisningen ble holdt etter at åpningsseremonien og en lunsj var avviklet inne i museet. Konservator Tore Fossum (1926-2017) hadde mobilisert herredsskogmestere fra Hedmark og fiskere fra Sølensjøen i Rendalen til å bemanne koier og anlegg. Her demonstrerer museumsbestyreren fallstokk. Tilskueren lengst til venstre (i regnfrakk og uniformslue) er fra kongens følge. Deretter følger sekretæren i museets styre, Wilhelm Matheson (1910-2001), kongen, Torstein Fossum (konservatorens sønn) og en mann vi foreløpig ikke kjenner identiteten til.
Fotografiet er tatt i forbindelse med åpningen av Norsk Skogbruksmuseums nybygg 22. juni 1971. Flere av bildene museet har i sitt arkiv fra denne dagen er tatt av Jostein K. Nysæther, men han er sjøl med på enkelte opptak (ikke dette), så han kan ikke ha vært den eneste som tok bilder for museet på denne dagen.
