Våren 1984 sendte treforedlingsbedriften Borregaard brev til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening med varsel om at de ønsket å avvikle bruken av vassdraget som transportåre for sitt tømmerråstoff i løpet av 1984 og 1985. Ettersom Borregaard på de siste sesongene hadde vært den eneste bedriften som kjøpte fløtingstømmer ved dette vassdraget, var det åpenbart at dette ville bety slutten for en mange hundre år gammel bruk av det rennende vannet i Norges lengste vassdrag til fløting. Den 26. april 1984 vedtok styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening at virksomheten skulle opphøre etter 1985-sesongen, og at alle virksomhetens forpliktelser skulle avvikles innen utgangen av 1987. Vedtaket fikk også ringvirkninger ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum, som satte i gang «Prosjekt Glomma». Målet var å dokumentere fløtingsaktivitetene ved å sikre et størst mulig spekter av kildemateriale om denne virksomheten, for å underkaste det vitenskapelig bearbeidelse og neste instans formidle den kunnskapen dette ville generere. Prosjektet skulle realiseres i løpet av perioden 1984-1988. Arbeidet ble igangsatt, i nært samarbeid med Glomma fellesfløtingsforening, der ledelsen delte museets interesse for å ta vare på historisk interessant materiale, men uten langsiktige kostnader for de bedriftene som hadde hatt interesser i fløtinga. Styret i Fellesfløtningsforeningen måtte blant annet avvikle sitt ansvar for en del eiendommer og installasjoner virksomheten hadde hatt i og ved vassdraget. Noe ble revet og fjernet, men i mange tilfeller inngikk organisasjonen avtaler med tilstøtende grunneiere om det videre ansvaret for hus og anlegg som Fellesfløtningsforeningen hadde eid. Alt i 1984 forhandlet Norsk Skogbruksmuseum og Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening om overtakelse av Sørlistøa, som siden 1939 hadde vært administrasjonssenter for fløtinga på innsjøen Osen, i grensetraktene mellom Åmot og Trysil kommuner i Hedmark. Det dreide seg om 7 bygninger, med grunnflater fra 1 til drøyt 225 kvadratmeter, samt båter og en god del annet løsøre som hadde vært brukt i forbindelse med fløtinga. Avtalen om at Norsk Skogmuseum skulle få kjøpe Sørlistøa ble konsesjonsbehandlet av landbruksnemnda i Åmot og fylkeslandbruksstyret i Hedmark i 1985, og deretter kunne transaksjonen fullføres. Deretter begynte museet å utvikle planer for å gjøre Sørlistøa til et formidlingssenter for fløtingshistorie og ferskvannsbiologi. Undervisnings- og utstillingsleder Jostein K. Nysæther utviklet planer for hvordan det store båthuset kunne innredes til formidlingslokale. Deretter startet arbeidet med enkel registrering av løsøret – gjenstandsmaterialet – og utforming av utstillinger. Sørlistøa ble åpnet for publikum i 1989. Attraksjonen ble etter hvert videreutviklet med flere flotte tablåer – modeller fra fløternes arbeidsliv – som ble skapt av treskjæreren Ragnar Nysæther. Museet har bare vært tilgjengelig for publikum sommerstid.
Denne spillfløtetønna var blant de gjenstandene som kom i Norsk Skogbruksmuseums eie ved overtakelsen av Sørlistøa i 1984-85.
