- History
År 1898 mönstrade August på en passagerarbåt i Gävle och sedan följde flera år till sjöss. Han avlade styrmansexamen 1903 och fick därefter anställning som lotslärling i Sundsvall och tjänstgjorde då bl a som extra fyrvaktare på Draghällan. Några år senare, 1906, tog han lotsexamen och året därpå sjökaptensexamen. Därefter följde en ettårig reservofficerskurs i flottan och ett år till sjöss som andre styrman.
August Westerberg utnämndes 1910 till kronolots för att tjänstgöra på Bremön och bosatte sig där tillsammans med sin hustru. Han tjänstgjorde där som lots till 1926 då han förflyttades till Sundsvall. Hela familjen, som då hade utökats med sonen Anders och dottern Britta, född 1916, flyttade in till Sundsvall där man bosatte sig på Södermalm.
August Westerberg befordrades till överlots 1931 och avgick med pension 1946.
August fritidsintressen var skeppsbyggeri och lots- och fyrväsendet. Han hade också ett stort intresse för framför allt Sundsvalls och Bremöns lokalhistoria. Det lokalhistoriska intresset för sin barndoms Gävle har också lämnat spår i de efterlämnade handlingarna. Dessa fritidsintressen resulterade också i ett stort antal artiklar i Sundsvalls Tidning och ett omfattande, hittills opublicerat, manus med titeln ”Bidrag till Sundsvalls lotsplats historia”.
