Glennetangen lense ble bygd etter et vedtak som ble gjort av styret i det nyetablerte Glomma fellesfløtingsforening i 1936, like etter sammenslutningen av Christiania Tømmerdirektion og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion. Vedtaket ble gjort fordi ledelsen i den nye organisasjonen var smertelig klar over at effektiviteten ved Nes lense, som hadde vært i drift siden 1908, og som lå noen kilometer høyere oppe i elva, aldri kunne bli helt optimal. Ved Nes var det problemer med strøm, og i perioder også med vind. Reguleringstiltakene som fulgte stadig flere kraftverksdammer i nedre Glomma førte dessuten til at fløtingsarbeidet i denne delen av Glomma måtte forseres i perioder da kraftverkene så seg råd til å slippe mye vann forbi dammene, noe som skapte kapasitetsproblemer ved Nes-lensa. Undersøkelser hadde vist at både strøm- og vindforhold var bedre på strekningen Glennetangen – Finnskott. Flyttinga av et slikt stort lenseanlegg var imidlertid en kostbar affære, som tømmerkjøperne ikke torde gi seg i kast med før de to gamle fellesfløtingsforeningene i vassdraget var slått sammen til én. Vedtaket om å bygge et nyanlegg ble altså gjort i 1936. Arbeidet med å bygge den nye lensa ved Glennetangen begynte året etter, og anlegget sto ferdig til bruk i 1938. Glennetangen lense gjennomgikk en større ombygging tidlig i 1960-åra, og var i bruk inntil fløtinga i vassdraget ble avviklet i midten av 1980-åra. Mot slutten var Borregaard fabrikker den eneste bedriften som fikk tømmer via vassdraget, så da ble det mindre sorteringsarbeid, men naturligvis mye sopping (bunting) med sikte på tømmersleping i det østre elveløpet. Lenseanlegget på Glennetangen fikk ei kraftig oppsamlings- eller beholdningslense, som startet ved Lystadtangen i Skiptvet på vestsida og ved Finnskott i Rakkestad på østsida. Nederst i beholdningslensa ble tømmeret sluppet inn i sorteringslensa gjennom to såkalte «søkker». Nedenfor ble det fordelt på fem avdelinger, som endte i hver sin mosemaskin. På vegen mot disse maskinene ble tømmeret sortert etter påslåtte øksemerker i «lommer». Når disse var fulle, ble virke fra samme lomme (med samme merke) ble sluppet samlet ned til mosing (bunting). Før ombygginga tidlig i 1960-åra var sorteringsanlegget om lag 2 000 meter langt og hadde 120 båser. Etterpå ble anlegget forkortet til cirka 1 100 meter og antallet båser ble redusert til 42 samtidig som antall mosemaskiner ble redusert til 4. Nye vaiertrekk som førte tømmeret raskere gjennom kanalene ned mot mosemaskinene gjorde at de ble bedre utnyttet enn tidligere. Disse endringene gjorde det mulig å redusere arbeidsstokken ved anlegget betraktelig uten at det gikk ut over «ekspedisjonshastigheten» ved anlegget. Den nye teknologien som ble innført ble drevet av elektromotorer, så forbruket av elektrisk energi ved Glennetangen lense økte betraktelig etter ombygginga. Besparelsene på lønnsbudsjettene var imidlertid langt større enn påslagene på strømregningene. Kostnadene knyttet til ombyggingsarbeidene i første halvdel av 1960-åra ble inntjent i løpet av tre driftssesonger. Moderniseringsprosjektet speilte både strukturelle endringer i tømmermarkedet (færre, men større bedrifter kjøpte tømmeret) og i den tilgjengelige teknologien. Lenseanlegget ved Glennetangen var i drift inntil Glomma-fløtinga ble avviklet etter 1985-sesongen. De siste åra var det bare Borregaard i Sarpsborg som fikk fløtet tømmer i vassdraget.

Fotografiet er tatt i medstrøms retning. I forgrunnen, nederst på bildet ser vi tømmerinntaket, der løstømmeret ble ført via ei traktformet lense som endte i en forholdsvis krapp sving. Der ble stokkene trukket inn i et retteanlegg med en serie roterende piggvalser som tømmeret skulle under. Hver valse hadde sin egen motor. Her ble tømmeret drevet i suksessivt i økende hastighet fram mot ei «bru». Derfra ble stokkene kastet ned i en kum. Like ovenfor kummen var det et retterhjul på tvers av strømretningen som bidro til at stokkene kom rett og fint inn i «renna», den kanalen som ledet tømmeret ned mot «mosemaskinene», hvor det ble buntet med sikte på videre buksering mot Sarpsborg. Opprinnelig skal Glennetangen lense ha hatt to slike retteanlegg, men det ene ble etter hvert flyttet til det ovenforliggende lenseanlegget ved Fetsund. Denne teknologien ble introdusert på Glennetangen i forbindelse med en stor ombygging av lenseanlegget i første halvdel av 1960-åra. Da var antallet tømmerkjøperen i vassdraget synkende. Det ble stadig mindre sagtømmer og en stadig større andel - cirka to tredeler av totalkvantumet - var sulfittømmer, råstoff til papirfabrikker der massen ble produsert ved hjelp av syre. Dette forenklet sorteringsanlegget betydelig. Det ble fargekoder i tømmermerkinga - hovedkategorien, sulfittømmeret fikk ikke fargemerke, sulfattømmeret skulle ha kvite malingsflekker, toppmålt gran (skurtømmer) ble merket med gult og de øvrige sortimentene skulle ha grønne fargemerker, som supplement til kjøpernes øksemerker. Dette forenklet sorteringa, anlegget kunne krympes til neste halv størrelse og bemanninga kunne reduseres fra 270 mann til drøyt 100 mann. Fra midten av 1960-åra ble anlegget drevet videre med 4 «mosemaskiner», der man presset høvelige mengder sortert tømmer sammen i bunter («moser»), omgitt av vaierbind («grimer») for videre buksering nedover Glommas østre eller vestre løp. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt, i 1985, var det bare Borregaard i Sarpsborg som fortsatt kjøpte fløtingstømmer i Glommas nedslagsfelt, og stokkene gikk derfor usorterte gjennom lenseanlegget ved Glennetangen. Etter å ha passert retteanlegget gikk det nedover ei «renne», en rettlinjet kanal omgitt av flåteganger, nedover mot de to mosemaskinene som fortsatt var i drift, «A-maskinen» og «B-maskinen». Disse maskinene hadde hver sin renne med vaiertrekk som bidro til stabil framdrift. Rennene mot de to nevnte mosemaskinene gikk parallelt, og tømmeret kunne ledes fra den ene til den andre renna etter behov, med sikte på at kapasiteten på begge maskinene skulle bli godt utnyttet. Ferdige moser ble samlet til slep nederst i anlegget og lagt langs land i påvente av slepebåten, som på dette tidspunktet bukserte tømmeret ned til Borregaards terminal ved Oppsund i det østre elveløpet.
Ved inngangen til året 1984 startet Norsk Skogbruksmuseum arbeidet med det som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Da var det klart at den tradisjonsrike tømmerfløtinga i vassdraget ville bli avviklet i 1985. Museet ønsket derfor å få i gang et dokumentasjonsprosjekt der tømmertransporten på vassdraget skulle ha hovedfokus. Historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som hadde arbeidet ved museet fra 1982, skulle ha hovedansvar for prosjektet. Han tok sikte på å samle et representativt utvalg av løse gjenstander fra fløtinga til museet, han ville dokumentere faste fløtingsinnretninger i vassdraget, ta vare på eldre fotografier og arkivalia, samt samle det han kalte «minne- og tradisjonsmateriale» med tilknytning til Glomma-fløtinga. Særlig museets fotograf, OT Ljøstad, var en trofast samarbeidspartner under arbeidet med prosjektet. Vestheim og Ljøstad reiste mye langs vassdraget i 1984 og 1985, men også i oppryddingsfasen i de par første sesongene etter dette. Glomma fellesfløtingsforening overlot sitt fotoarkiv, som besto av 72 album en del negativmateriale fra ulike deler av vassdraget, til Norsk Skogmuseum. Papirarkivene ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la dem bli liggende i den murte delen av kontorkomplekset Fellesfløtingsforeningen hadde hatt på Fetsund. Der veiledet Øivind Vestheim en del lokale medarbeidere som ble engasjert for å ordne arkivet. Forvaltningen av arkivmaterialet ble etter 1990 overlatt til lensemuseet, som ble etablert på Fetsund dette året. Mange av gjenstandene Vestheim samlet inn til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i forbindelse med prosjektet ble dessverre kjørt direkte på fjernmagasin i Elverum, uten at de ble registrert. Dermed gikk beklageligvis viktig informasjon om proveniens og bruk tapt. Heller ikke de fotografiske opptakene ble tilfredsstillende registrert da de var «ferske». Øivind Vestheim brukte en kassettopptaker som «feltdagbok» under mange av turene langs vassdraget. Bjørn Bækkelund skrev av mange av kassettene etter at han begynte ved museet høsten 1997. Innslagene av tradisjons- og minnemateriale på disse opptakene var få. Prosjekt Glomma skulle opprinnelig vare fra og med 1984 til og med 1988, altså i fem år. Det viste seg imidlertid at oppgavene ble mange, og at arbeidet tok lengre tid enn forutsatt. Øivind Vestheim avsluttet sin del av prosjektet med utgivelsen av boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer» i 1998. Han sluttet for øvrig ved museet like før boka var ferdig. I ettertid har nye medarbeidere ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum gradvis forsøkt å krympe det forvaltningsmessige etterslepet etter Prosjekt Glomma.
