Kjelvik var det betydeligste stedet i den lengste perioden på Magerøya. Helt fra Middelalderen av var stedet et anselig fiskevær, handelssted og sentrum for Kjelvik kommune. Når motoren kom ved siste århundreskiftet ble båtene større og tyngre og kunne ikke lenger uten videre trekkes opp på land. Kjelvik mistet gradvis sin betydning. Den dårlige havn og ingen skikkelig veiforbindelse ble stedets undergang.
Kjelviks siste kirke, viet St. Nikolai, ble ødelagt av orkanen allerede i 1882. Kun kirkeklokken ble skånet. Den er sannsynligvis støpt i Bremen/Tyskland i 1521 og er den eldste kirkeklokke som har hengt i noen kirke i Finnmark, og som fremdeles er bevart (finnes på Nordkappmuseet).
På grunn av bl.a. avfolkning av Kjelvik bestemte kommunestyret at det nye kirke skulle stå i Honningsvåg. Den ble innviet i 1885.
Kjelvik ble egen kommune 18.03.1861, første ordfører var bestyrer for Kjelvik handel O.J.Wiik. 01.07.1950 skiftet kommunen navn til Nordkapp kommune.

Lilienskiold var en dansk-norsk embetsmann og kunstner. Han er kjent som forfatter av flere topografiske verk fra sin tid som amtmann i Finnmark 1684-1701.
Hovedverket hans er "Speculum Boreale" (Nordspeilet) fra rundt 1698. Boken lagde han da han bodde i Vadsø og manuskriptet er bevart i to foliobind i Det kongelige Bibliotek i København. Verket er en beskrivelse av liv og levekår i Finnmark, og det finnes også bevart flere forarbeider, blant annet som Finmarckens Beskrivelse.
