Etter 2. verdenskrig arbeidet sentrale aktører i mange lands skogbruk ivrig for å integrere nye teknologier i næringas driftsprosedyrer. Produksjonen skulle moderniseres og effektiviseres, noe som også var viktig for å være konkurransedyktig i et stadig mer globalisert marked for produkter som ble lagd med tre som råstoff. I Norge representerte den skogbaserte industrien en stor og viktig sektor i økonomien i de første tiåra etter krigen, og mange var bekymret for at råstoffsituasjonen til denne næringa. Av den grunn forsøkte man å avvirke hogstmoden skog i alle slags terreng, og det var viktig å sørge for rask og god gjenvekst. Noe av det som karakteriserte det norske skogbruket var nettopp det kuperte, ofte bratte terrenget, der det ofte var vanskelig å frakte tunge tømmerstokker til nærmeste fløtingsvassdrag eller bilveg. I enkelte tilfeller viste det seg at kostnadene ved avvirkning og framdrift oversteg markedsverdien til tømmeret. Dette var bakgrunnen for at forsøk med nye transportløsninger for slikt terreng var en av de utfordringene det driftstekniske forskningsmiljøet i Det norske Skogforsøksvesen arbeidet mest med. Det var taubaneløsningene som ble viet mest tid og oppmerksomhet, men også andre løsninger ble prøvd. En av dem var brukt av helikopter. Dette er, som kjent, et luftfartøy med rotorblad som løfter fartøyet fra bakken og beveger det i ønsket retning. Idéen om en «luftskrue» er kjent allerede fra Leonardo da Vincis skisser fra slutten av 1400-tallet. Det tok imidlertid lang tid før ideen ble en praktisk realitet. Først da det kom forholdsvis lette, kraftige forbrenningsmotorer på markedet, skjøt eksperimenteringa fart. I andre halvdel av 1930-åra greide tyskerne å utvikle helikoptre som kunne være til praktisk nytte, og snart kom det også amerikanske modeller. Helikoptrenes gjennombrudd i luftfarten skjedde i åra like etter 2. verdenskrig. Denne utviklinga ville teknologioptimister i skogbruket gjerne være med på, for helikoptrene var svært manøvrerlige, uansett om terrenget var vegløst.
Det kanadiske skogbruket fikk en egen helikoptertjeneste alt i 1950. Maskinene ble i første omgang brukt i skogbrannvern, skogtaksasjon, ved utstyrstransport og leteaksjoner. Fra midten av 1950-åra begynte man også, i fjellområder i Alaska, Skottland, Kaukasus og Alpene, å eksperimentere med tømmertransport ved hjelp av helikoptre. Forsøkene tydeliggjorde det mange hadde tenkt seg: Helikopteret er et kostbart driftsmiddel som egner seg best for transport av lett gods med høy verdi, fortrinnsvis over forholdsvis korte distanser. De første analysene fra 1956 antydet at helikopterdrifter kostet 5-6 ganger så mye som tradisjonelle drifter, tidlig i 1960-åra kom en forsøksrapport fra Oregon, der man da hadde greid å krympe helikopterkostnadene til det tredobbelte av de driftsutgiftene man tidligere hadde hatt i tilsvarende terreng. I denne perioden kom nye helikoptertyper med gassturbinmotorer, som økte løfteevnen, men også drivstofforbruket. Dette utstyret ville også Ivar Samset og hans kolleger ved den driftstekniske avdelingen i Det norske Skogforsøksvesen prøve. I Kviteseid i Telemark, i S. D. Cappelens skoger sør for Tarranut, på østsida av Kviteseidvatnet, fant de et vegløst område med kløfter og små stup der det hadde vist seg vanskelig å få skogsdriftene til å lønne seg. Her fikk Skogforsøksvesenets mannskaper anledning til å snauhogge et areal på om lag 9 dekar med hogstmoden furuskog, der tømmeret skulle hentes med helikopter og transporteres over distanser på 1,6, 3,5 og 4,9 kilometer og cirka 630 høydemeter ned i Kviteseidvatnet, hvor Skiensvassdragets Fellesfløtningsforening overtok ansvaret for den videre transporten.
Ved helikoptertransport var det viktig å nyttiggjøre seg kjøretøyets løfteevne. Helikopteret som ble brukt – en Bell 204-B – ble oppgitt å kunne ta drøyt halvannet tonn nyttelast. Forskerne ønsket å nyttiggjøre seg mesteparten av denne kapasiteten, men ikke å presse grensene. Derfor ble stokkene, som hadde svært varierende lengder og diametermål, veid og samlet i passende lass. Lassene veide gjennomsnittlig 1 378 kilo (86 % av oppgitt løfteevne) og hadde et gjennomsnittlig volum på 2,32 kubikkmeter (fastmasse). Metoden forutsatte omhyggelige forberedelser på hogstfeltet med handlunning, veiing og stropping med blikk for de enkelte stokkenes balansepunkt. Stroppene ble koplet til en utløserkrok under helikopteret. Deretter ble det fløyet ned mot Kviteseidvatnet, hvor det ble sluppet, vanligvis fra cirka 5 meters høyde, ned i en ringbom, der stroppene ble samlet opp for gjenbruk fra en robåt. Prosessen var mannskapskrevende. Helikopterselskapet stilte med pilot, mekaniker og en påkopler. Skogeieren stilte med to «stroppere» på hogstfeltet, og en mann samlet stropper på Kviteseidvatnet. Forskerne fulgte arbeidet med registrering av vekt- og kubikkmål, samt av tidsforbruk i ulike faser av helikoptertransporten. For å begrense tidsforbruket og nytte transportkapasiteten maksimalt, ble det gjort forsøk på å slippe noen av lassene fra store høyder (opptil 300 meter), slik at helikopteret kunne returnere raskt til hogstfeltet. Ved høye fall viste det seg imidlertid at stokkene ble knust, og konklusjonen ble at lassene måtte ned i 10 meters høyde over vannet for å tåle møtet med vannflata. Konklusjonen etter analysene av tømmerets vekt og volum, helikoptertider og arbeidstimer for mannskapet var konklusjonen klar: «Helikoptertransport er for tiden ikke økonomisk konkurransedyktig med vanlige driftsmetoder i pent terreng.» Forskerne avviste imidlertid ikke at helikopteret kunne være et interessant alternativ i vanskelig fjellterreng, forutsatt at det var snakk om forholdsvis store, godt planlagte drifter.
Denne håpefulle oppfatningen var antakelig bakgrunnen for at man fortsatte forsøksdriftene med helikopter i S.D. Cappelens fjellskog i Kviteseid. I 1966 fikk man anledning til å teste verdens da største helikopter, det russiske «MI-6», som kunne løfte inntil 12 tonn og brukte bortimot 4 000 liter drivstoff i timen. Denne gangen ble tømmeret hentet fra et felt sør for Dyreskarnut på vestsisda av Kviteseidvatnet. Tømmerbuntene veide gjennomsnittlig noe over fem tonn og hadde en kubikkmasse på gjennomsnittlig 8,5 kubikkmeter (fastmasse). Denne gangen var transportdistansen på snaut fem kilometer og høydeforskjellen 390 meter. Det viste seg at større helikopter og større lass hadde svært liten innvirkning på driftskostnadene, som fortsatt var store. Det viste seg også at det var vanskelig å samle lass som var store nok i det svært kuperte fjellterrenget. Økonomien i helikopterdriftene viste seg vanskelig, uansett størrelsen på helikoptrene som ble brukt. Likevel fortsatte forsøkene, først med buntete tømmerlass, i 1980 også med transport av ukvistete enkelttrær.

Fotografiet er tatt idet helikopterpiloten nettopp hadde sluppet en tømmerbunt ned på Kviteseidvatnet. Den avbildete maskinen var i midten av 1960-åra verdens største helikopter. Helikopterkroppen var 33,2 meter lang og rotorbladene spente over en diameter på 35 meter. Maskinen veide 40,5 tonn og kunne i tillegg frakte 12 tonn nyttelast i et romslig, men enkelt utstyrt lasterom. MI-6 hadde to kraftige gassturbinmotorer, som til sammen kunne utvikle 11 000 hestekrefter med et drivstofforbruk på 3 500 – 4 000 liter i timen. I Kviteseid ble maskinen testet på henting av buntet tømmer fra den nevnte lokaliteten sør for Dyrskarnut, 4 860 meter fra og 390 meter høyere enn slippstedet i Kviteseidvatnet. Tømmeret på hogstfeltet var på forhånd samlet i bunter med drøyt 5 tonns vekt og gjennomsnittlig 8,5 kubikkmeters volum (fastmasse). Buntene ble hengt under helikopteret i cirka 10 meter lange bærestropper. Konklusjonen fra disse undersøkelsene ble at kostnadsbildet minte om det man hadde hatt da man et par år tidligere hentet noe tømmer fra en annen lokalitet i området med et noe mindre helikopter et par år tidligere. Den store russiske maskinen kunne riktignok ta noe større bunter, men på kløftet, blokkrik mark som her innebar det tidkrevende manuelt slit å samle store tømmerbunter. «Selv om selve helikoptertransporten blir noe billigere med en større maskin, vil de øvrige kostnader bli noe høyere», skrev forsøkslederen, professor Ivar Samset (1918-2015). Det han ikke skrev, men erfarte, var at helikoptertransport av tømmer var tapsbringende. Driftskostnadene knyttet til arbeidet på hogstfeltet og bruken av helikopteret oversteg tømmerets omsetningsverdi. Dette fotografiet er hentet fra ei samling som er skapt av og har tilhørt Det norske Skogforsøksvesen (1917-1972), Norsk institutt for skogforskning [NISK] (1972-2006) og Norsk institutt for skog og landskap (2006-) på Ås i Akershus. Tore Vik, som gjennom mesteparten av sin skogfaglige karriere var forsker ved de nevnte institusjonene, tok kontakt med Norsk Skogmuseum om arkivene etter virksomheten i 2007, året etter den gang siste omorganisering av virksomheten. De gamle arkivene med dokumenter og fotografier fra Avdeling for driftsteknikk forekom ikke den nye ledelsen relevante, og det ble reist spørsmål om Riksarkivet i Oslo eller Skogmuseet i Elverum kunne bidra til bevaring. Museet sa seg villig til å påta seg denne oppgaven. Avtale om overtakelse av fotoarkivet ble inngått i 2008. Materialet består av positivkopier i brevordnere, film i konvolutter og dias. Til sammen anslås det å omfatte cirka 27 000 opptak, i hovedsak fra perioden 1947-1990. Mye av materialet er fra prosjekter Avdeling for driftsteknikk har hatt i norsk skogbruk, men en god del er også fra reiser professor Ivar Samset gjorde som leder for den internasjonale skogforskningsorganisasjonen IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations). Kvaliteten på opptakene er varierende.
Helikopteret tilhørende Aeroflot er en Mil MI-6 Hook med registrering CCCP-06174 og Serie nummer: 5682010. Dette ble vist på Le Bourget - Paris Air Show i 1965.
