Rendalen er Norges nest største skogkommune. Bare Trysil har større skogarealer. Mye av skogen i begge disse kommunene står imidlertid på boniteter hvor veksttakten er langsom, men hvor virkeskvaliteten i mange tilfeller blir meget høy. Det å få tømmer fra rendalsskogene ut til et betalingsvillig marked har alltid vært en utfordring, for avstanden til store befolkningssentra og foredlingsindustrien har alltid vært lang. Lenge var det vassdragene som var transportårene. Rendølene fløtte tømmer i elvene Brya og Finstadåa, Væråa, Unsetåa, Tysla og Nordre Rena, Mistra og Grøna, samt på Lomnessjøen og Storsjøen. Det tømmeret som ble slått på vannet nord for Storsjøen utgjorde i 1900-tallets første tiår cirka seks prosent av den totale tømmermengden som ble fløtet i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget. Av dette igjen ble 36 prosent levert langs Storsjøens strender. Tømmermengdene varierte noe fra år til år, og gjenspeilte antakelig fluktuasjoner i tømmerpriser og vekslende driftsforhold i skogene. Generelt sett lot det imidlertid til at omsetningen var økende.
Storsjøen i Rendalen er om lag 36 kilometer lang og opptil 2, 5 kilometer bred. Det sies også at denne innsjøen skal være opptil 300 meter djup. Dette betyr at det var umulig å bruke spillflåte når tømmeret skulle over denne sjøen. Fløterne måtte sette sin lit til vinden og til strømninger i vannmassene, men naturkreftene førte ikke alltid tømmeret sørover mot Sjøli- og Løsset-traktene, der strømmen i elva Rena skulle ta det videre mot Glomma. Ble fløtingsvirket liggende i Storsjøen når det led mot høst og vinter, gjaldt det å få det på land, hvor det ble lagt til tørk med sikte på videre fløting neste sesong. Slikt tømmer tapte seg imidlertid i kvalitet, noe som innebar kraftige pristrekk fra trelasthandlernes side. Den første dampbåten på Storsjøen var «Renen», som ble bygd ved Akers mek. Verksted i 1856. D/S Renen var først og fremst en lokalrutebåt, som transporterete passasjerer og løsgods opp- og nedover langs sjøen, men som i ledige perioder også slepte tømmerbommer. Etter at jernbanen gjennom Østerdalen ble åpnet i andre halvdel av 1870-åra forvitret det økonomiske grunnlaget for driften av D/S Renen. Dermed fulgte om lag tre tiår da framdriften av fløtingstømmeret over sjøen igjen var fullstendig overlatt til naturkreftene. I 1911 kontraherte Christiania Tømmerdirektion (som seinere skiftet navn til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening) en slepebåt for bruk nettopp på Storsjøen i Rendalen. «D/S Storsjø» ble bygd i seksjoner ved Glommens mek. Verksted i Fredrikstad. Seksjonene ble transportert med jernbane til Koppang, og derfra over kjølen til nordenden av Storsjøen med hester og sleder vinteren 1911-12. Der ble seksjonene klinket sammen, slik at båten kunne settes i drift i fløtingssesongen 1912. For Christiania Tømmerdirektion ble dette en god investering. Det viste seg nemlig at båten med sin 100 hestekrefters dampmaskin eliminerte 35-40 prosent av mannskapsbehovet i fløtinga i denne delen av vassdraget. De første åra var det årlige fløtingskvantumet i Storsjøen på om lag 1, 6 millioner tylfter tømmer – nesten 20 millioner stokker. Suksessen førte til at det ble bestilt en tilsvarende båt etter samme tegninger, men i litt mindre format og med litt mindre maskin for fløtinga på Osensjøen i grensetraktene mellom Åmot og Trysil, D/S Trysilknut. I 1950-åra ble de fleste av slepebåtene i norsk tømmerfløting ombygd fra damp- til dieseldrift. For D/S Storsjøs og D/S Trysilknuts vedkommende ble slik ombygging vedtatt i Glomma fellesfløtings styre høsten 1956. Nye firesylindrete firetaktsmotorer med 135 hestekrefter – MVM type RHS 526 V – ble bestilt fra Mannheim i Tyskland våren 1957 og montert på begge de nevnte slepebåtene påfølgende høst og vinter. I forbindelse med uttaket av digre dampkjeler og overflødiggjøringa av brenselslagrene om bord var det naturlig å ominnrede båtene, så vel under som over dekk. Dette ble gjort også på Storsjø. Med dieselmotoren kunne bemanninga på slepebåten reduseres, noe som i ei tid med stigende lønninger innebar en kjærkommen mulighet til å krympe fløtingskostnadene betraktelig. M/S Storsjø dro sine siste tømmerslep over Storsjøen i 1984, som var siste fløtingssesong i den øvre delen av Glommavassdraget.
Etter at fløtingsepoken var over, ble M/S Storsjø først solgt til Ottar Rønning. I 1992 overdro han fartøyet til forretningsmannen Arvid Øyhus på Gjøvik. Øyhus skal etter eget utsagn ha investert to millioner kroner i oppussing av fartøyet, som han brukte som fritidsbåt på Mjøsa. I 2014 kjøpte Rendalen kommune M/S Storsjø tilbake for 400 000 kroner. Dertil kom en utgift på 300 000 kroner for lastebilfrakt fra Gjøvik til Åkrestrømmen i Rendalen. Denne kompliserte transporten ble utført av firmaet Prøven Transport fra Trondheim. Oppdraget ble løst natta mellom 6. og 7. august 2014, på et tidspunkt da lastebilen med den forholdsvis store båten skulle være til minst mulig sjenanse for annen vegtrafikk. Målet med tilbakekjøpet var «å få tilbake» et viktig symbol på en sentral virksomhet i Rendalens historie. Kommunen overlot fartøyet og driftsansvaret til «M/S Storsjøs venner», en organisasjon som sommeren 2014 hevdet å ha bortimot 400 medlemmer.

I vintersesongen lå båten i opplag på en slipp ved den såkalte «Dampbåtvika» på østsida av Storsjøens nordende. Her var det lagt en skinnegang på tresviller i en slak skråning ned mot sjøen og et stykke videre under vannflata (til venstre i dette bildet). På denne skinnegangen gikk det ei vogn med jernbanehjul. Vogna var forankret i en kraftig vaier med forbindelse til en vinsj et stykke oppe på land. Ved hjelp av denne vinsjen kunne vogna, med båten som last, kjøres kontrollert ned mot sjøen eller opp igjen på tørt land. Til høyre i forgrunnen lå det en del værslitt lensetømmer. Direksjonen (styret) for Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Glomma fellesfløtingsforening) vedtok i 1911 å gå til anskaffelse av en dampslepebåt som kunne brukes til å trekke tømmer i bommer over den lange og djupe Storsjøen. Her hadde det vært vanskelig å få fløtt fram virket i løpet av en sesong, noe som innebar verdiforringelse av tømmeret. Det nye fartøyet ble kontrahert fra Glommens mek. Verksted i Fredrikstad. I mangel av farbar vannveg mellom verftet og sjøen der båten skulle brukes ble komponentene fraktet med tog til Koppang. Derfra ble de trukket på sleder over til Burua i Ytre Rendalen, hvor komponentene ble klinket sammen. D/S Storsjø ble 58 fot 6 tommer lang og 12 fot bred. Ved normal belastning gikk kjølpartiet 6 tommer under vannskorpa. Båten ble satt i drift våren 1912 og gikk som tømmersleper i Rendalen fram til 1984.
