Knivsmeden Even Johannes Blindingsvolden fortalte i et intervju (se nedenfor) at bestefaren hans (antakelig Even M. Blindingsvolden [f. 1859]) kjøpte ei smie da barnebarnet var 16-17 år gammel, og at smia ble gjenoppført på gardsbruket Rudsland hvor unge Even bodde. Tidspunktet det refereres til må ha vært i midten av 1920-åra. Den smiebygningen som i dag står på Rudsland framstår ikke som en konstruksjon som var gammel på dette tidspunktet. Det virker mer sannsynlig at eksisterende bygning ble reist nettopp i 1920-åra, men kanskje kom noe av det første utstyret som ble brukt her fra ei eldre smie?
Smia Even J. Blindingsvolden arbeidet i er oppført i bordkledd bindingsverk, delvis på en lav tørrmur, dels på en støpt mur (verkstedrommets øst- og nordvegger). Bygningen er 9,56-9,58 meter lang og 4,52-4,53 meter bred, og har altså ei grunnflate på drøyt 43 kvadratmeter. Av dette er om lag 24,5 kvadratmeter i den nordvestre enden av bygningen et verkstedrom med dobbelt, isolert bordkledning og bordkledd, isolert himling. Smierommet i sørøstenden har enkel bordkledning og åpen himling.
Bærekonstruksjonene, bindingsverket, er lagd av bjelker med tverrmål 4" X 4". Ytterveggene er kledd med 1" låvepanel (bordbredde ca. 11,5 cm) som er rødmalt. Gesimshøyden er 2,47 meter. Huset har fire torams vinduer (92 X 92 centimeter), tre i verkstedrommet og ett på smierommets østvegg. I verkstedrommet, som ble brukt året rundt, er det dobbeltvinduer. Inngangen til verkstedrommet skjedde via ei dør på sørvestre langvegg, eller egentlig ei trerams innvendig speildør og ei utvendig enkel borddør. Smierommet har en dobbelt port, også den plassert på sørvestre langvegg, mot Prestvegen. Det finnes også ei lita speildør i tverrveggen mellom de to rommene, slik at knivmakeren kunne bevege seg mellom smia og verkstedet uten å gå ut. Smia har saltak som bæres av 15 sperrepar (4"X 2"), montert med en gjennomsnittlig senteravstand på 77-78 centimeter. Sperrene støttes av en mønsås, som bæres av bjelker som kviler på tverrveggene. Sperretaket ble først lektet og tekket med flis, men har seinere fått et overtak av bølgeblikk.
Avlen er et teglsteinsmurt, rektangulært volum (163 X 112 centimeter) som rager 60 centimeter over golvflata, som er støpt, noe som later til å ha skjedd etter at bindingsverkskonstruksjonen var ferdigbygd. Den er plassert i bygningens sørøstre hjørne, med plater i et eternittliknende materiale som isolasjon mot trekonstruksjonene. 83 centimeter over ildstedet er det ei traktformet stålkappe (163 X 103 centimeter) som leder opp mot et kvadratisk røykløp (26 X 26 centimeter) som er ført gjennom taket. Også kappa og røykavløpet later til å være sekundære. På nordøstveggen, til venstre for avlen, finnes det ei vifte med rørforbindelse til ildstedet, som kan stenges ved hjelp av et spjell. Vifta hentet frisk, oksygenrik luft, gjennom et rør gjennom den nevnte ytterveggen. Ved siden av står det ei anna vifte, med rør som er ført gjennom veggen mot verkstedrommet, der det tjente som avtrekk for en rigg med slipe- og polerskiver. Begge viftene later til å være betraktelig nyere enn mye av det andre utstyret i bygningen. Smiestedet (ambolten) står på en opp-nedvendt trestamme som delte seg i fire greiner, som her tjener som bein. Den er plassert et par skritt fra avlen. I det søndre hjørnet av smierommet står det ei trekasse (110 X 50 centimeter), hvor det sto litt stål. Inntil veggen mot smierommet finnes et lite skuffemøbel, en slags kommode, som muligens kan ha hatt ei fortid som hengemøbel på en vegg.
Verkstedrommet har et gråmalt tregolv med bordbredder på 9 og 18 centimeter. En svikt like innenfor døra mot Prestvegen kan tyde på at luftinga i stubbloftsonen har vært for dårlig, til tross for at det finnes to steinforete luftekanaler mot denne vegen. Veggene i verkstedrommet er kledd med høvlet glattpanel med 9 centimeters bordbredde, mens taket har tilsvarende kledning med 8 centimeters bordbredde. Veggene og taket er umalte. Vinterstid ble rommet oppvarmet av en vedovn på veggen mot smierommet. Ovnen var en modell fra Drammens jernstøperi, merket «Brann». Treveggen bakenfor er skjermet med eternittliknende plater. Langs den nordvestre gavlveggen står det en arbeidsbenk med blikkbeslått plate, skuffer og skap. På benken er det montert ei stolpestikke og ei lita skrustikke. På veggflatene over benken er det opphengt maler og småredskap som han brukte i arbeidet sitt. I hjørnet til venstre for arbeidsbenken står det et noe større skap. Ved verkstedrommets nordøstre vegg er det plassert noe som kan se ut til å være ei valsemaskin og et stativ med slipe- og polerskiver. Ved den sørøstre verkstedveggen står det (nærmest døra) en komfyr og ei stor, kraftig Singer-symaskin for lær.
I knivmakerverkstedet til Even Johannes Blindingsvolden hang følgende avisomtale, som Ove Johansen (1931-2011) har skrevet følgende om Even Blindingsvolden i lokalavisa Ringsaker Blad/Brumunddølen:
«En av de siste knivsmeder.
Jeg sitter her og beundrer et praktstykke av en slirekniv, elegant innsvinget skaft av flammende hvalbjørk, blankpolerte holker av nysølv med graverte ornamenter, svart lærslire med preget mønster og ikke minst knivbladet, håndsmidd av beste sort svensk stål, smalnende mot spissen, avfaset med dekorert nakke, riktig vinkel med skaftet og med lynende skarp egg. Presisjon og kvalitet i minste detalj. Et redskap som ved sin form og utførelse representerer kunsthåndverk av høy klasse. På bladet står det E J B som står for Even J. Blindingsvolden.
Prestvegen stikker brått av fra bygdevegen ved Rudshøgda og snor seg langs skigarden fram til et lite rødmalt hus i vegkanten. Vi har tatt turen til knivsmeden i Rudsland, den samme Even J. Blindingsvolden, som daglig er å finne i sitt verksted, travelt opptatt med et yrke som det ikke finnes mange utøvere av i dag. Vi kommer inn i et verksted som minner om sadelmaker, gullsmed, snekker, mekaniker og smed. Her skal nemlig arbeides i både tre, lær og stål. Her skal sveises og herdes, beises og lakkeres og preges. Verktøy, sirlig opphengt på arbeidsbenken, slipemaskiner, stanse og presse, utstyr av mange slag. Det hersker mønstergyldig orden overalt, men vi kan la Blindingsvolden selv fortelle:
- Jeg kom hit sammen med min far i 1917. Stedet var husvær under Rud, og ikke mye å berge seg på. Det ble åkerbrøyting og grøfting sammen med vanlig gardsarbeid.
- Hvor har du lært smiingen og knivarbeidet?
- Jo, det hadde seg slik at bestefar kjøpte en gammel smie når jeg var 16-17 år gammel, den ble flyttet til Rudsland og her begynte jeg å kvesse mineborer og hakker. Dette lærte jeg av min onkel Ludvig Oluf Knutsen, som bedrev den merkelige kombinasjonen av smed og danselærer. Han var rene kunstsmeden og lærte meg også herding av redskapen.
Syverin Stensåsen, som bodde i «borti Prøysen» var også knivsmed, og av ham lærte jeg å slå ut knivblad. Utover i 30-årene begynte jeg så smått med knivarbeid.
- Er ikke dette å smi et knivblad med god egg litt av en kunst?
- Kvaliteten i stålet som brukes er meget viktig. Jeg bruker bare svensk støpestål fra Eskilstuna. Bladet har en kjerne av stål med jern på begge sider. Dette kalles på kombinere stål og jern. Bladet sveises i avlen, og det er meget nøye med varmen, ikke over 900 grader. Det ser jeg på fargen. Etter dette grovsliper jeg bladet på smergelskive, men ikke «til egges». Det skal være kvitt i eggen. Deretter følger herdingen, som en må være meget nøye med. Anders tømmermann, som også var en dyktig smed, lærte meg at ved herding skulle bladet aldri være varmere enn «dauild». Det skulle ikke blåses på kullene i avlen, med herdes i «ildmørjehaugen». Til avkjøling bruker jeg olje, da det er mindre fare for «herdesmell». Dette lærte jeg av smed Andersen i Moelv. Etter herding skal bladet «anløpes». Det varmes jevnt opp til fargen er kobberrød. Først nå er det ferdig til oppsliping og polering.
- Ja, dette var litt av en prosess, som må foregå med både skjønn og følsomhet, og nå kan altså initialene E J B preges inn som kvalitetsmerke, men hvor får du materialene til de fine treskaftene fra?
- Jeg bruker valbjørk, som er vanskelig å oppdrive. De vokser helst langs gamle elvefar. Treet har en livlig flammende struktur som kommer godt fram ved beising. Skaftemnene pusses med stålull og påføres 4 strøk klar selluloselakk. Det utspares for holker og bores ut for tangen, som skal gå gjennom skaftet med en gjenget messingmutter i enden.
- Ja, dette er det mange som lurer på. Even viser fram et redskap, en slags rasp som utformer hullet, slik at tangen med svak krumming kan føres gjennom, deretter bøyes den i sin rette vinkel og holken på tappen dekker hullet som blir for mye. Ja, holken, kniven er jo utstyrt med reine sølvholker både på skaft og slire. Det er nysølv som benyttes. Jeg valser platene ut til passe dimensjoner, som deretter blir presset ut i sin rette form og slagloddet. Verktøyet til dette har jeg laget sjøl, likeså maler, former og en hel del utstyr ellers. Mesteparten av verktøyet jeg bruker er ikke å få tak i og må spesiallages.
- Det må ha tatt lang tid å skaffe seg alt dette og å finne ut den beste framgangsmåten?
- Ja, det har kommet etter hvert. Den valsen du ser der har jeg kjøpt av en gullsmed på Hamar. Smergelskivene har Gustav Hovde i Moelv laget. Mønsterklisjeen har jeg fått tak i av en svensk kobberslager. Gravørstikler har jeg delvis kjøpt, delvis laget sjøl, og ellers har jeg hatt øynene med meg der jeg har fartet.
- Ja, nå har vi vært innom smiearbeid, trearbeid og delvis gullsmedarbeid, men hva med sliren, det må vel nærmest bli skomakeryrket?
- Du ser den maskinen der, det er en sadelmaskin, og her syr jeg sliren sammen, men først må læret bløtes, så drives lesten inn i sliren som skaper formen og mønsteret preges inn ved at klisjeen varmes opp og presses mot læret. Da gjenstår en del småarbeid, farging, montering av hempe og en del finpuss, så kan kniven presenteres som det stykke kunsthåndverk det er. Avsetningen er det så visst ikke noe problem med, men heller vanskelig å kunne etterkomme alle bestillinger, men så bruker jeg også 20-25 timer på hver kniv. Så er en ute etter store fortjenester, får en drive med andre ting. En skjønner at det sammen med prisen på materialene vanskelig kan bli rare timelønnen.
Vi har med interesse fulgt alle leddene i framstillingsprosessen og forstår at vi har blitt innført i et gammelt håndverk som Blindingsvolden i dag kanskje er den eneste utøveren av. Eller vet du om noen andre som har opprettholdt denne form for knivproduksjon – bortsett fra kanskje noen få i Telemark.
- Har du så noen som kan føre dette videre, og har du vært i kontakt med noen som kan bevare dette særpregede håndverk for ettertiden?
- For det første har jeg nå ikke tenkt å legge opp på mange år enda. Skogbruksmuseet i Elverum har fattet interesse for dette, og vært her, dessuten har jeg hatt besøk av Terje Godtås fra Skien, som viste stor interesse, og likeledes fra Østlandssendingen.
- Når du en gang legger smihammeren og gravørstiklene ned, og hvis ingen etterfølger tar over, hadde du da noe ønske om hva som skulle skje med denne særpregede virksomheten?
- Jeg skulle nok gjerne sett at noe av dette kunne bli bevart for ettertiden, og gjerne på sin opprinnelige plass.
Som tidligere nevnt ligger Blindingsvoldens smie langs den gamle og kronglete Prestvegen, Alf Prøysens veg, vegen med det egenartede miljø helt fra Rudshøgda til Ulveplassen. Her er plass for dikterhjem, husmannsstue og knivsmedens verksted.»
Den 8. februar 1980 publiserte Hamar Arbeiderblad følgende usignerte reportasje om knivmakeren Even Blindingsvolden:
«Knivsmeden Blindingsvolden ved Præstvægen:
Han bruker 50 timer på kniven
Jeg var 17 år gammel da jeg smidde mitt første knivblad. Det skjedde etter at jeg hadde sett Severin Stensåsen i Bortiprøysa smi og herde et blad. Det var all lærdommen jeg fikk, resten måtte jeg lære meg sjøl. Men det har blitt mange kniver til mellom hendene mine etter den tida.
Hedmarks siste knivsmed, 72-årige Even Johannes Blindingsvolden, er i dag landskjent for sine kniver. For noen år siden ble det gjort TV-opptak av knivsmeden som holder til langs Præstvægen i Rudshøgda, og siden den gang har bestillingslistene vokst ham fullstendig over hodet. Nei, aldri om jeg rekk etter den lista. Knivsamlerne står i kø for å kjøpe knivene mine, og da jeg bruker drøye 50 timer bare på en kniv, er det ikke akkurat snakk om noen masseproduksjon, sier Blindingsvolden. For det å lage en skikkelig kniv er et kunsthåndverk det står respekt av. Først skal skaftene slipes, helst av valbjørk – ei bjørk som vokser på helt spesielle steder. Her i distriktet finnes det tresorter langs Brumundelva, og også langs Gudbrandsdalslågen, og den utmerker seg ved at den liksom har små flammer i veden. Siden skal stålet herdes og «anløpes», og endelig skal slira lages. Blindingsvolden mestrer alle disse prosessene.
Den kanskje vanskeligste delen er idet stålet skal herdes. 800 grader må til før en får den riktige spenningen i stålet, og for å bli kvitt denne igjen må stålet nedkjøles – eller «anløpes» over glødende kull. Da gjelder det å ha øya med seg. Først skal kniven få en messingfarge i seg, siden mer en kobberfarge. Da den siste fargetonen er kommet skal den dyppes i kaldt vann – bladet er ferdig.
Men enda står mye arbeid tilbake? Ja, slira skal tilpasses, sys sammen og kanskje få mønster på seg. Dessuten skal jo skaftet monteres og knivbladet slipes kvasst. I tillegg kommer eventuell gravering av pynten på skaftet. Til det bruker jeg ofte nysølv. Før laget jeg en del skaft av elggevir, og da slo jeg like gjerne små «plugger» nedi til dekor.
De utrolig mange kniver til tross, du er ingen storforbruker av råmateriale? Jeg kan fortelle at en gang kjøpte jeg to bjørker på Nordhagen i Veldre. Av dem hadde jeg skaftved i 21 år!
Og ingen av knivene dine har blitt misbrukt gjennom tidene? Nei, de fleste henger vel til pynt på stueveggene. Det er snart ikke et mannfolk som vet hvordan en kniv skal slipes og brynes, så det samme kan det være også. Og siden jeg har holdt meg langt unna handel med tatere og delvis også solunger, har vel knivene mine sluppet unna de verste slagsmålene, sier Blindingsvolden med et lurt glimt i øyet.»
Åsmund Eknæs, etnolog og konservator ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum, skrev følgende artikkel etter å ha snakket med Even J. Blindingsvolden:
«Knivsmeden.
I dag er det ei yrkesgruppe som i Hedmark og Oppland har svært få utøvere, og navnet knivsmed har ikke lenger noen forankring i menigmanns bevissthet. Men for et par generasjoner siden, da brukskniven hang på baken til de fleste mannfolk utover bygdene, var knivsmedene blant de sentrale håndverkere i mange bygdelag. Da var deres produkter gjenstand for inngående kvalitetsvurdering, og diskusjonen gikk livlig om hvilken smed som frembragte de beste blader med hensyn til bett i eggen, styrke og utforming.
Knivsmedens sentrale stilling i bygda var den gang helt naturlig, fordi hans produkter ble brukt daglig av de aller fleste. En god kniv var forutsetningen for å få gjort arbeidet skikkelig og lettvint. I dag er ikke behovet for kniv i det daglige tilstede i samme grad. Eller, om mange kanskje ofte kan savne en, så er det ikke ansett for passende å gå med kniv. Kniven er blitt mer et redskap til turbruk. Butikkene er da også fulle av masseproduserte fiske-, jakt-, speider- og souvenirkniver i de merkeligste utforminger.
Disse fabrikkproduserte knivene virker til å nivellere ut de distriktsvise variasjoner som en før kunne se i knivtypene. Innen de forskjellige produksjonssentra hadde det vokst fram det vi kan kalle en norm for hvordan en kniv skulle se ut. Det var derfor ikke vanskelig å ta ut de knivene og knivbladene som kom fra Tinn i Telemark, fra Toten eller fra Hedmark.
I dag er det ikke mange igjen av smedene som opprettholder disse tradisjonene, men vi kan av og til være så heldige å komme borti kniver som er laget på tradisjonelt vis, og som har alle de kvaliteter våre forfedre krevde av en god kniv. En av disse få, og kanskje den eneste som i dag driver knivsmiing yrkesmessig i Hedmark, er Even Johannes Blindingsvolden fra Ringsaker. I snart 50 år har han forsynt Hedmarksbygdene med sine forseggjorte kniver, stemplet E.J.B.
Det var i 1925 at Blindingsvolden smidde sin første kniv. Den eneste formen for utdannelse i knivsmedyrket han til da hadde, var at han hadde sett på den gamle smeden Severin Stensåsen, mens denne smidde et par blader. Om resultatet kanskje ikke ble så overvettes den første tida, gikk det ikke så lenge før Blindingsvolden-knivene ble et begrep utover bygdene.
Den viktigste delen av en kniv er selvfølgelig bladet, og det er mange faktorer i smiinga som skal klaffe om resultatet skal bli bra. For det første må råmaterialene være gode. Som kjent blir en norsk tollekniv smidd med en kjerne av eggstål og et lag jern på hver side. Dette gir bladet den rette spensten og gjør at det kan tåle belastning uten å brekke. Før krigen fikk han tak i engelsk kullstoff til støpestål, men dette er ikke mulig lenger. Blindingsvolden har derfor gått over til svensk Bofors-stål. Mens jernet tidligere også var svensk, er dette byttet ut med tysk smijern. Det tredje viktigste råstoffet ved smiinga er kullet. Er dette fullt av stein eller svovel, vil det være nesten umulig å få til et godt resultat. Det gode engelske smikullet som ble brukt før krigen er ikke å få lenger. Han bruker nå koks nr. 3.
Som tidligere nevnt skal jernet ligge på begge sider av stålet. Dette får han til ved å ta et jerntykke, ca. 30 cm langt og brette det over stålet. Dessuten skal en god del av jernet smis ut til tange, dvs. den delen som skal gå gjennom skaftet. I tangen kan det ikke være stål fordi den da blir vanskelig og bøye til og gjenge opp.
Jernet og stålet kan ikke bare bankes sammen. Det trengs et «limstoff» som hjelper til ved sammensveisingen. Til dette bruker Blindingsvolden boraks. Det er også mulig å benytte sand, men da er det en fare for å få for hard sveising med dårlig egg som resultat.
Med boraks mellom jern og stål blir emnet varmet i essa til ca. 900 grader og så banket sammen. Er alt gjort riktig, blir stål og jern sveiset til nesten uten synlig overgang. Det kan være enkelte steder der jern og stål ikke er helt sammenføyd. Disse «veilene» er kanskje ikke så pene å se på, men for kvaliteten av bladet har de ingen ting å si. Tvert imot er ofte blad med litt veile de beste fordi det da i hvert fall ikke er brukt for sterk varme ved sammensveisingen.
Når bladet er grovhamret, skal det herdes. Dette er en prosess som har alt å si for kvaliteten. Herdinga foregår ved at bladet varmes opp til en viss temperatur for deretter å bli stukket ned i vann. En flink smed ser på fargen på bladet når det er passe varmt. Det sier at det skal ha farge som «moden kirsebær». Under dette arbeidet er det viktig ikke å ha det for lyst i smia, for da kan en lett feilberegne fargen på bladet og dermed varme det for mye. Et herdet blad kan ikke brukes umiddelbart. Det er en viss grad av spenning i stålet som først må fjernes ved såkalt «anløping». Nå blir bladet varmet forsiktig ved å føres fram og tilbake over ildmørja i essa. Når det har fått messinglét, blir det igjen stukket i vann. Både ved herding og anløping bør vannet være temperert.
Det grovsmidde bladet blir som en siste behandling pusset og slipt. Nå får det sin endelige form og ser pent ut, men det er i de tidligere stadier, sveising, herding og anløping at dets virkelige kvaliteter blir bestemt. Blindingsvoldens knivblad har både disse indre og ytre egenskaper. Ved siden av å være kvalitetsmessig på topp er de usedvanlig vakkert utført. Dette er smiarbeid på sitt beste!
Et godt smidd blad skal også ha skaft og slire. De skaftene Blindingsvolden helst lager, er bøyd framover øverst. Typen bygger på en ytre form som ble brukt av den kjente Hedmarkssmeden Even Marken. Råmaterialet er gjerne valbjørk, og de blir pusset, beiset og lakket slik at mønsteret og livet i treet kommer fram. Noen ganger er trestrukturen slik at skaftet blir penest ubeiset. Skaftet blir til slutt utstyrt med graverte nysølvholker.
Slira er av svart lær og har presset mønster. Mønsteret har han på en messingform. Denne formen blir skrudd fast til den gjennombløtte slira så hardt at mønsteret preges i læret. Messingen varmes opp tter noen minutter kan den fjernes igjen, mens mønsteret sitter der permanent. For at slira skal bli stiv og holdbar, blir den tørket på svak varme i en steikeovn.
Etter neste 20 timers arbeid er kniven nå ferdig fra Blindingsvoldens hånd og kan omsettes. Før siste krig var han årvisst med kniver på de store handelsmarkedene, f. eks. Grundsetmart’n i Elverum. Ellers har sportsforretninger i distriktet vært sikre avtakere. I de seinere år har mye av omsetningen gått gjennom et engros-firma. Even J. Blindingsvolden tok 25-30 kroner for knivene sine i 1950. I dag er prisen ca. 75 kroner. Med tanke på det arbeid som ligger bak, er prisen altfor lav, og vi har vel her den vesentligste årsaken til at knivsmedyrket og andre håndverk er i ferd med å forsvinne. Det er ikke lenger noe samsvar mellom det produsenten er nødt til å ha for å få et rimelig utkomme og det publikum er villig til å betale. Hvis da ikke dagens velstandsøkning og en viss trøtthet overfor det masseproduserte kan bli knivsmedens redning.

Knivsmeden Even Johannes Larsen Blindingsvolden (1908- 1985) ble født på gardsbruket Blindingsvolden i Veldre allmenning, der besteforeldrene Even Mathisen (f. 1850) og Syvrine Olsdatter (1842-1921) var brukere. Der levde han sine første barneår. I 1916 kjøpte tanta, Sina Evensdatter Blindingsvolden [seinere g. Skaug] (1880-1967), og mora, Eli Evensdatter Blindingsvolden (f. 1882), det lille bruket Rudsland for 3 500 kroner. Dette var en tidligere husmannsplass, som var fradelt garden Rud i 1896. Rudsland ligger mer sentralt i bygda, ved Prestvegen, like sør for husmannsplassen hvor forfatteren og visesangeren Alf Prøysen (1914-1970) vokste opp. Evens foreldre var ikke gift med hverandre, og Even fortalte seinere (se Ove Johansens [1931-2011] artikkel nedenfor) at han flyttet til Rudsland med faren Lars Langård (1881-1956) i 1917. Lars var jordbruks- og anleggsarbeider, og skal ifølge etterkommerne ha gjort en stor innsats for å gjøre den forhenværende husmannsplassen til et veldrevet småbruk. Søstrene Sina og Eli eide Rudsland sammen fram til 1929. Da solgte Sina sin halvpart til Eli, Evens mor. Even sjøl giftet seg i 1934 med Magna Sofie Harsjøen (1909-1997) fra Røros, og to år seinere fikk han skjøte på Rudsland. Even og Magna fikk barna Elna Synnøve, Ments Herman og Edvin. Even tilbrakte stort sett dagene i smia og verkstedet sitt, men knivprisene var lave, så inntektene fra arbeidet var beskjedne. Magna tok hovedansvaret for småbruket, som var en viktig del av familiens livsgrunnlag. På sine eldre dager fikk Even J. Blindingsvolden mye oppmerksomhet fordi han ble ansett for å være en av de siste knivmakerne her til lands. I 1975 var han hovedperson i et 15 minutter langt fjernsynsprogram NRK-journalisten Hans Christian Alsvik kalte «Knivmakeren». Etter denne eksponeringa av det spesielle tradisjonshandverket eksploderte etterspørselen etter produktene fra verkstedet ved Prestvegen. I 1965 overlot Magna og Even J. Blindingsvolden eiendommen Rudsland til sønnen Ments, som to år tidligere hadde giftet seg med Borgny Ødegård (1944-1999). De fikk tre barn: Anstein, Bjørn Magne og Wenche Merete. Etter Borgnys død flyttet Ments over i «Raustuggua» og overlot eiendommen Rudsland til dattera. Wenche, mannen Ove Solvang og deres to døtre bodde på eiendommen inntil den ble solgt høsten 2017. Wenche B. Solvang, som respektfullt hadde latt bestefarens verksted stå slik det hadde vært mens han var aktiv knivmaker, tok da først kontakt med Ringsaker kommune, deretter med Norsk skogmuseum i Elverum, for å forhøre seg om det var andre som var interesserte i å overta materialet etter Even J. Blindingsvolden med sikte på bevaring. Den 3. oktober reiste fotograf Bård Løken og konservator Bjørn Bækkelund til Rudshøgda for å se på verkstedet og smia.
