Det norske Skogfrøverk overtok ansvaret for frøplantasjedriften i Norge i 1995. På dette tidspunktet var mange slike anlegg var allerede etablert, dels i fylkesskogselskapenes og dels i den offentlige skogforskningens (NISKs) regi. Hedmark skogselskap fikk leid cirka 500 dekar dyrket mark på Sanderud av Hedmark fylkeskommune fra 1986. Arealet ble i hovedsak beplantet med podinger av elitegran, med sikte på høsting av frø med gode genetiske egenskaper for bruk i lavlandstrøk på Østlandet. Sanderud har også mindre arealer for produksjon av bjørke- og svartorfrø. Plantasjen ble etablert med økonomisk støtte fra Landbruksdepartementet gjennom Landbrukets utviklingsfond og med faglig bistand fra det som da het Statens skogfrørverk og Sønsterud planteskole. 2006-2007 var et bra frøår for gran, og det var den første sesongen det ble foretatt storstilt sanking i det da cirka 20 år gamle anlegget på Sanderud. En del av konglene var infisert av rustsoppen Pucciniastrum areolatum, på norsk kalt «lokkrust». Denne soppen hemmer frøutviklinga i konglene. Frøutbyttet i 2006 ble likevel bra. Økende bruk av plantasjefrø i stedet for vanlig bestandsfrø har hevet kvaliteten på det materialet norske skogplanteskoler leverer til skogbruket.
Den 31. oktober 1986 publiserte Hamar Arbeiderblad følgende reportasje om skogfrøplantsjeprosjektet på Sanderud, signert Henning Holter Christensen:
«Landets største granfrøplantasje.
Landets største granfrøplantasje er i ferd med å ta form i Stange. På gården Sanderud skal et 500 dekar stort areal bli en gigantisk plantasje for lavlandsskog. Prosjektet omfatter nøyaktig registrering av 20 000 trær.
I disse dager plantes de første 4 000 småbuskene på Sanderud gård. De fem år gamle buskene blir ventelig produktive rundt midten på 1990-tallet, opplyser fylkesskogmester Olav Kaveldiget til Hamar Arbeiderblad.
Gigantprosjektet, som er helt unikt her i landet, støttes av Statens skogfrøverk, Sønsterud planteskole og fylkeskommunen. Fylket har leid ut jorda til prosjektet på en 40-års kontrakt. Skogselskapet er driftsansvarlig.
2 MILLIONER
Fylkesskogmester Olav Kaveldiget opplyser at frøplantasjen i Stange vil dekke behovet for frø til lavlandsskogen i sørøst-Norge. Arealet ved Sanderud utgjør egentlig bare 10 prosent av det totale frøavlsarealet i Norge. Sanderudprosjektet blir allikevel enestående med sine 20 000 trær på rekke og rad.
Prosjektet har en treårig tidsplan. Høsten -88 skal hele feltet på 20 00 trær være ferdig etablert. I år skal 100 dekar beplantes, mens arealet dobles i 1987 og 1988. Landbruksdepartementet ved Landbrukets Utbyggingsfond (LUF) har bevilget 1 million kroner, men samlet vil hele prosjektet trolig komme opp i 2 millioner kroner.
For å utnytte Stange-jorda hundre prosent, kommer vi til å vurdere andre treslag i tillegg på visse småfelter. Valg av treslag gjenstår, men contorta, furu eller lerk er vurdert. Disse treslagene er det mulig å putte inn i plantasjen. Lerkeproduksjonen i Norge er interessant. Selv har vi ikke så mye behov for lerkefrø, men internasjonalt er etterspørselen stor. Et eksportland er for eksempel Island. Skogbruket her hjemme vil også enten kunne bruke frøene selv, eller sende de på eksport, sier Kaveldiget.
STORT ANSVAR
Fylkesskogmesteren legger ikke skjul på at utviklingen på frøavlområdet bokstavelig talt har eksplodert de siste åra. Nå hviler det selvfølgelig et stort ansvar på Hedmarkskogbruket for å videreutvikle prosjektet.
Hamar Arbeiderblad besøkte forleden leder ved frøplantasjen i Stange, Anne Herud. En plantegjeng er nå i ferd med å sette de første 4 000 trærne i bakken før frosten kommer. Herud overlater imidlertid ikke noe til tilfeldighetene. Hvert eneste tre som skal ut på det 500 dekar store området, blir katalogisert, og kan med letthet finnes fram i dataarkivet. Samtlige 20 000 grantrær har sitt eget nummer.
MØYSOMMELIG PROSESS
Først om 10 år kan prosjektarbeiderne samle kongler fra et produktivt tre på Sanderud. Dette er tida fram til den endelige frøproduksjonen. Herud regner med at det vil være mulig å samle kongler fra grantrærne i 25 år. Frøplantasjen i Stange skal gi frø til lavlandsskog fra 140 meter til 300 meter over havet i sørøst-Norge.
Noen har reagert på at vi bruker dyrkningsjord til dette prosjektet. Til det kan jeg si at det er frø vi jobber med og ikke trevirke. Det blir nemlig vanskeligere og vanskeligere å samle frø fra skogen i åra framover. Og etter 40 år skal frøavlstrærne hogges ned.
ELITETRE
Det ligger et oppsiktsvekkende arbeid bak Stange-prosjektet. Frøene fra den framtidige frøplantasjen blir av beste klasse. De 20 000 grantrærne som i nærmeste år skal plantes på Sanderud, er podet med kvist fra et elitetre. Det vil si at kvist fra spesielle trær med fin kvalitet er podet på stammen til grunntreet. Herud forteller at når grantreet får kongler, får frøet fra podingen de samme egenskaper som modertreet. I år har Sønsterud og Biri planteskoler podet 4 500 trær. Hele 85 prosent av podingene har slått til, og det er ekspertene meget tilfreds med.
BEDRE TILVEKST
Hvorfor er det så nødvendig å komme i gang med frøplantasjen nå, Herud?
Vi trenger bedre plantegrunnlag. Plantasjen i Stange vil gi oss planter av ekstra god kvalitet. Dette har mye å si for økt tilvekst. Vår målsetning er å kunne benytte frø fra utelukkende fra frøplantasjer. Konglesankingen er nemlig usikker, sier Herud.
SÅFORSØK
Fylkesskogmester Olav Kaveldiget opplyser forøvrig at skogbruksetaten i Hedmark har interessante frøforsøk i gang i Vang. Et 70 dekar stort område i Vangsåsen skal brukes til contorta våren -88. I samme område planlegges også en furufrøplantasje på 80 mål.
På Braset i Vang skal vi drive såkalte avkomforsøk på 150 dekar. Disse forsøkene er et viktig ledd i frøplantasjeforsøkene. Hensikten er å teste foreldrekombinasjonen. Dette gjøres ved å velge framtidsstammer, og momenter som vekst, kvalitet og ikke minst plantens motstand mot frost, er helt avgjørende, presiserer fylkesskogmester Kaveldiget.»

Sankeren hadde klatresele og var sikret mot fall ved hjelp av et elastisk tau som var ført rundt trestammen. Dermed kunne han stå relativt trygt mens han plukket kongler ned i sekken han hadde festet på hoftekammen. Smit er født i den lille nederlandske byen Varnsveld. I Nederland tok han en grad i tre- og landskapspleie som gjorde at han kunne kalle seg «boomversorger». Smit kom til Norge tidlig på 2000-tallet med en kompetanse knapt noen andre her til lands hadde. Han bosatte seg først i Brumunddal, seinere på Ring i Ringsaker. Han etablerte firmaet «Innlandet trepleie», som blant annet tilbød tjenester til hageeiere og kommunale parketater. Smit har også uvanlig gode klatreferdigheter, og han har derfor hatt en del oppdrag for Det norske skogfrøverk, blant annet i frøplantasjene som denne institusjonen forvalter.
