I boka «De Sandvigske samlinger i tekst og billeder: Fra ættegården til husmannsplassen – et bidrag til Gudbrandsdalens kulturhistorie» (side 242-248) fra 1928 beskrev museumspioneren Anders Sandvig (1862-1950) Knuvelbua og bruken av denne bygningen slik:
«Fiskerbua fra Knuvelen, som vinteren 1921 blev innkjøpt og flyttet til Maihaugen, er gjenreist ved søndre tjern like ved Fiskerkapellet. Fiskerbua er av en langt senere dato enn kapellet og ikke tilnærmelsesvis utført med den omhu som dette. Kapellet forteller oss om middelalderens høie tømmermannskunst, mens bua her viser et middelmådig arbeide fra firtiårene. Men sett i sammenheng med disse to bygninger adskillig av verdi å berette.
Knuvelbua er som kapellet en laftebygning på 10 kvarv med åre midt på gulvet, som årestuene fra Tolstad og Bjørnstad. Den har en bredde av 6,58 og en lengde av 6,97 m.
Den har jordgulv som disse to og er uten vinduer. Men derimot har den to langaktige glugger på begge tverrvegger, en på hver side av døren, som vender ut mot vannet, og to tilsvarende på den bakre tverrvegg, som vender mot land. Tømmeret i veggene er ikke her som i kapellet og en del av de eldste bygninger på Maihaugen «horkjedrege» eller «ringjehoggje», d. v. s. hver stokk tiløkset efter et bestemt mål. Nei, her er det gjort enklere. Stokkene er bare teljet flate på den ytre og indre side; men om rotenden av stokken var betydelig høiere enn toppenden, når den blev laftet inn, blev der ikke tatt noget hensyn hertil. Det ordnedes på den enkle måte, at toppenden i næste kvarv blev laftet mot rotenden og omvendt, til huset var tømret op. Her er det gått frem på denne måte. Skjønt vi her har for oss en årestue, viser laftene at den ikke er gammel. De må nærmest henføres til «barkjehugst». Disse er for øvrig kraftig og greit sammenføiet, men litt usikre i utførelsen, ujevne og uten fasthet i formen. Men derimot er nåvene ganske morsomme. De optrer her i en ny skikkelse og har hverlen med katthuggu- eller hesthuggunåv å gjøre og kan heller ikke henføres til variantene av den siste nåv. På grunn av at stokkene i veggen er teljet flate på begge sider, vil uvilkårlig nåvene derved også bli det og kommer nærmest til å ligne «tjuvfrinåv» eller «stabelnåv» [tjuvfrinåv og stabelnåv er egentlig det samme …], men den forskjell, at stokken så vel på over- som underkant av nåven er avsneiet i hjørnene, og derved blir nåven nærmest åttekantet og får med ett en annen karakter. Den er også noget lengere enn de før nevnte nåver og den yngste type i rekken av disse. Den går under navnet knubbenåv. Den virker ikke på langt nær så fin og elegant, hverken i form eller utførelse som dens øvrige frender. Når denne nåv kom i bruk, kan ikke med sikkerhet sies; men den er ikke meget over 100 år gammel. Knubbenåven synes å være mest brukt i den søndre del av Gudbrandsdalen og da særlig omkring Lillehammertraktene.
Knuvelbua har som de fleste hus på Maihaugen åstak, men det avviker i flere henseender noe fra de øvrige hvad opbygning og reisning angår. For det første har denne ikke fjerdingsrøst. Taket er her betydelig spissere og ligner mere Fiskerkapellets takreisning, som står ved siden. For det annet er såvel mønsåsen som de andre åser, der bærer det tunge stentak på hver side av røkpipen, opstøttet av to sperrelignende stokker, der i nedre ende hviler mot to horisontale runde stokker eller kroner, som strekker sig tvert over hele huset med 2 meters mellemrum innfalset i den øverste kant av begge veggbandstokkene. Denne kombinasjonen av åser med to sperrer som underlag, har jeg ikke støtt på tidligere; men da huset her har en anselig takflate og dessuten er tekket med stenheller, er det nok en påkrevet praktisk foranstaltning, selv om det faller litt utenfor den kjente konstruksjon.
Over disse to bjelker krysses de igjen av to tilsvarende fra begge tverrvegger med samme avstand fra hinannen. På denne måte opstår nu en firkantet åpning på vel 2 meter over åren. Da de sistnevnte bjelker ikke, som de to første, har noe med takkonstruksjonen å gjøre, kunde jeg ikke med det samme forstå, hvorfor disse var anbragt på denne måte. Men ved nærmere undersøkelse blev jeg opmerksom på at så vel disse som de førstnevnte, der løp ut fra begge langvegger, var flatteljet på overkanten, som dannet krysset over den firkantete åpning over åren. Det stod klart for mig, at dette arrangement måtte ha noe med ildstedet å gjøre. Jeg henvendte mig da til Thomas Jørstad, som jeg visste likesom sin far hadde vært en av loddeierne på Knuvelen, hadde deltatt i fisket fra han var ganske ung og passert gardene op til formann.
Han fortalte da, at huset alltid hadde hatt åre, men over det firkantete kryss, som dannedes av bjelkene, var det murt op et røkfang eller en pipe av gråsten, som gikk igjennem taket med en helle over. Bjelkene eller firkanten over åren, som røkfanget hvilte mot, var opstøttet i hjørnene av fire tresøiler. Men i 1860 blev såvel Knuvelbua som flere andre buer en vakker sommerdag revet bort av flommen, og da den blev fisket op igjen langt ute i Mjøsen og satt op på sin gamle plass, blev røkfanget av en eller annen grunn ikke opmurt igjen. Da denne kombinasjon av gammelt og nytt er så eiendommelig og så vidt mig bekjent enestående, har jeg efter Thomas Jørstads veiledning latt røkfanget eller pipen sette op igjen på sin opprinnelige plass.
Husets innredning er meget enkel for ikke å si spartansk. På hver langvegg er der fire senger, ialt 8. Hver er beregnet for to, således er det soveplass til 16.
Hr. Jørstad fortalte ved samme leilighet hvilke av de forskjellige gårder sengene tilhørte. Den til venstre for inngangsdøren var Bjerkes. Så kom Hoffs, videre Nordre Jørstads. Den innerst i kroken var forbeholdt de fungerende formenn. Efter dem måtte alle rette sig. De forvaltet til like brennevinsdunken, la han til med et lunt smil, og det var ofte ikke så liketil. I den andre kroken rett imot formennenes seng lå mælfiskerne, videre kom sengen til Onsum, så Borud og til slutt Rønne.
Varpet på Knuvelen har som før nevnt vært regnet for et av de bedre i hele Lågen, og fiskerne har gjennem tidene holdt godt sammen.
I 1849 stiftet de sin egen fiskerforening med sine egne bestemmelser som jeg her gjengir:
«Aar 1849 den 1. Oktober vare samtlige Eiere av Lagesildfiskeriet Krøgelen [forfinet skriftform for Knuvelen] samlede paa Fiskestedet, I Anledning af Fiskeriets Istandsættelse til forestaaende Lagesildgang. Broch foreslog og de øvrige Medeiere bifaldte at gjøre en Tour til Gaarden Onsum i Hensigt at faa oprettet en Forening, sigtende til Fiskeriets ordentlige Drift o.s.v. Foreningen kom istand og indtages her ordlydende med Bemærkning, at den in originale er nedlagt paa Gaarden nordre Jørstad.

Det hendte næsten hvert år ved St. Hans, at elven gik op i huset, enkelte gange helt op i sengene, men intet år har vært så slemt i den retning som 1847, når undtages 1789. De blev samtlige hytter deromkring tatt av strømmen som de stod og ført helt ned til Sæter, litt utenfor den nuværende dampsag. Buene blev imidlertid snart opfisket igjen og satt op på sine gamle tomter. Så sent som i 1909, da bua fra Øyra strøk, spøkte det igjen for Knuvelbua. Et merke innslått i 6te stokk i høire langvegg forteller oss om den kritiske situasjon den atter har vært i: men heldigvis holdt den, mens dens nabo på Øyra rett imot strøk med for stedse. Knuvelbua lå adskillig høiere og dessuten lunet av jordvoll på 3 sider – i likhet med den plass den nu har – og det tunge stentak hjalp visselig godt til å holde den på plass i det lengste. Men de stadige oversvømmelser år efter år tok sterkt på de underste kvarv, og da det dessuten ved flommen samledes jord og ellers brask mellem de ytre vegger og jordvollen den var lunet av, måtte de underste stokker ombyttes med nye. Nu står den imidlertid trygt; flommen i Lågen vil saktens ikke reise med den mere.»

Bygningen er seinere demontert og flyttet til friluftsmuseet på Maihaugen i Lillehammer by, der den er plassert ved «Breisjøen». Har framstår Knuvelbua som en laftet bygning med jordgolv. Interiøret er enkelt. Det besto av faste senger med en halvkløvningsbenk langs den ene veggen og et langbord langs den andre. Midt i rommet var det et åpent ildsted på en lav elvpall av tilhogd stein. Omkring dette sto det fire stolper, som støtter for krysningspunktene mellom tverrgående beiter og langsgående slinder i rommets raftsone. Oppå disse var det murt et pipeløp. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt hang det ei skjerding med ei støpt jerngryte over ildstedet og det hang nøter ved siden av ildstedet. På veggen i bakgrunnen skimtes en smal lysåpning. Bygningen ble opprinnelig brukt som kvilested for menn som deltok i det store sesongfisket etter lågåsild (Coregonus albula) i den nedre delen av Lågen.
