Wanja Söderberg - en stockholmska i Tvärgården
På hösten varje år delas Wanja och Torsten Söderbergs designpris ut till duktiga formgivare i Norden. Det är världens största designpris och prissumman är en miljon kronor.
Paret Söderberg var under många år bosatta i Sporred Tvärgården i Kållered.
Wanja Iwanovna Aminoff föddes i Stockholm 1899 och var dotter till Iwan Aminoff, arméofficer och författare av framför allt äventyrsböcker under pseudonymen "Radscha". Wanjas föräldrar flyttade ofta och hon kom att bo i Uddevalla, Skövde och Karlskrona.
Wanja gifte sig 1920 i Karlskrona med Torsten Söderberg och de bosatte sig i Stockholm. Vid mitten av 1920-talet flyttade de till Göteborg, där Torsten blev chef för Söderberg & Haaks Göteborgskontor.
År 1938 köpte makarna Sporred Tvärgården i Kållered. De byggde till den gamla huvudbyggnaden med en vinkelbyggnad och en ny ladugård. Senare kom den gamla huvudbyggnaden att rivas och ersättas med en ny. Gården skulle huvudsakligen användas som sommarnöje för makarna Söderberg och deras barn, men i och med att kriget bröt ut kom familjen att flytta ut för gott.
Myndigheterna rekommenderade att de som kunde flytta till landet skulle göra det. Man antog att det var mer skyddat där för eventuella bombanfall.
Göteborgsvåningen behölls, men uppläts 1943 till en judisk familj från Köpenhamn, som fått fly undan tyskarna.
Wanja Söderberg tog denna första vinter emot flera bekanta med barn i Tvärgården. Senare tog hon även emot sju finska krigsbarn.
På gården fanns vid denna tid arbetshästar, kor, får, höns och grisar. Man var väl rustade för ofärdstider. Ibland gick dock nog strävan till självhushåll till överdrift, så kardades, spanns och vävdes t ex av fårens ull kostymtyger utav Wanja.
Efter kriget fick Wanja mer tid för aktiviteter utanför hemmet. I Kållered var hon med i Röda Korskretsen och under flera år föreningens ordförande. Wanja blev också politiskt verksam och representerade Högerpartiet i dåvarande Kållereds kommunalfullmäktige, invald på en borgerlig samlingslista.
Några år var hon vice ordförande i kommunalnämnden. Dessa förtroendeuppdrag tyckte hon var mycket givande och hon kom väl överens, åtminstone på det personliga planet, över partigränserna.
När det nybyggda Brattåshemmet skulle inredas 1954 var Wanja en av de ansvariga för inköp av inventarier. På Mölndals stadsmuseum finns idag delar av inredningen utställd.
Wanja Söderberg var varmt troende katolik. Hon hade konverterat på 1930-talet. På gården hade hon ett litet kapell i en stuga, byggt av virke från den rivna ladugården. Här hade hon en andaktsstund med familjen varje söndag, fast ingen av de övriga i familjen var katolik. Gården besöktes ganska ofta av olika
katolska patrar och den katolska församlingens scoutkår hade ibland flerdagars-läger där. Vid ett tillfälle kom en stor grupp flickscouter ända från Frankrike.
Wanjas katolska tro hindrade henne emellertid inte från att också visa intresse för Kållereds församling. Hon var god vän med komminister, sedermera kyrkoherde, Lennart Leven, som kom att döpa flera av barnbarnen. Kållereds kyrka har som gåva från makarna Söderberg fått en gammal nattvardskalk , troligen med ursprung från Ungern.
Maken Torsten avled 1960. Strax före hans bortgång gjorde makarna en större donation till en stiftelse som årligen utbetalar betydande belopp till forskning inom huvudsakligen medicin, juridik och ekonomi. Senare också, som nämnts i inledningen, till formgivare i Norden.
Under början av 1960-talet inköpte Wanja fem-sex ridhästar och inrättade en mindre ridskola på Sporred Tvärgården. Detta var ju då inte så vanligt som nu. Denna ridskola blev mycket uppskattad. År 1964 sålde Wanja gården till sonen Tomas, och flyttade till Sörmland där hon inköpt en avstyckad gård, Malstanäs, nära Flen. Sonen Edvard hade köpt en närliggande större gård.
Ar 1966 gifte sig Wanja med professor Emil Jerlov, som varit chef för kvinnokliniken i Göteborg och utbildningen av barnmorskor vid Barnmorskeanstalten. Familjerna hade känt varandra länge och de båda hade mist sina tidigare livsledsagare.
Wanja Söderberg-Jerlow avled den 17 februari 1982 på Kullbergska sjukhuset i Katrineholm. Begravningsmässan ägde rum i Katolska kyrkan i Göteborg varefter kistan fördes till Kållereds kyrkogård där kyrkoherde Gustaf Lindman mötte den och den katolske kyrkoherden med begravningsföljet vid stigporten, och visade vägen till graven.
