Fra gammelt av lå «Storlensa» i Glommavassdraget like nedenfor Bingsfossen. Derfra og nedover mot innsjøen Øyeren var elva stilletflytene, og det var uproblematisk å ta seg fram med båt. Lenge tilhørte Storlensa ved Bingen grunneierne i området, som belastet tømmerhandlerne som fikk sortert tømmeret sitt her med avgifter. I 1811 ble anlegget kjøpt av Det Ankerske Fideikomis - et selskap som var tuftet på verdiene i dødsboet etter trelasthandler Bernt Anker. I 1826 fikk trelasthandlerne som opererte i vassdraget skjøte på lensene. De organiserte sortering av tømmeret fra de store skogsområdene ved den nordre delen av vassdraget ved Bingen. På denne tida var lenseanlegget ved Bingen ganske komplekst. I et skrift fra 1828 beskrives det slik:
«Naar Tømmeret om Sommeren og især i Flomtiden kommer nedad Elven, optages en del af Bergslænsen samt ved Høels- eller Foslænserne, for at Hovedlændsen ei skal overlæsses. Den Del derimod, som gaar ud Elven, stanses ved sidste Lænse. Saasnart denne faar mere Tømmer, end man tror, den kan modtage uden at briste, afstikkes det til de nedenforliggende Rebaklænsen og Sprænglænserne samt til Vestby-, Lystad- og Rømulænserne. Paa alle disse Steder og ved Hovedlænsen selv sorteres eller, som det kaldes, flakes Tømmeret efter Merkerne. En sorteret Rad, bestaaende av 5 Tylvter ved Siden av hverandre lagte Tømmerstokke, kaldes en Slipperad, og denne hænges i en Slake eller Sammenbindingslænse, som findes ved hver Tømmerlænse. Flake- eller Flødningsbinderen sammenføier gjerne 3 Slipperader efter hverandre, og disse kaldes nu en Bas. Er flere slike Baser færdige, løses de hver for sig fra Slakelænsen og føres længere ud i Elven, hvor de ved Stranden, med Grundeierens Tilladelse og mod Betaling, sammenbindes paa den Maade, at 5 Tylvter bliver i Bredden og 20 Stykker i Længden. Nu kaldes samlingen et Tømmerhundrede og transporteres saaledes til Sagbrugene ved Vahl, længere ned i Elven, til Gahnsbrugene og de øvrige Sagbrug i Øieren samt til Strømmen. Derimod gaar man gjerne med 150 eller 300 Tylter ad Gangen af det Tømmer, som skal [overe Øyeren og] gjennem Mørkfossen. …»
Da myndighetene i 1850-åra begynte å prosjektere en jernbane som skulle gå østover fra hovedstaden, «Kongsvingerbanen», med bru over elva ved Fetsund litt lengre nede i vassdraget, forsto kjøpmennene i Christiania Tømmerdirektion at det kunne bli problematisk å få tømmer i bommer eller bunter forbi brustedet. Derfor kjøpte de eiendommen Lund nedenfor jernbanebrua på Fetsund og en del tilstøtende strandarealer. Fra og med 1861 foregikk sorteringsarbeidet der. Man beholdt likevel anlegget på Bingen som attholds- eller beholdningslense, hvor man «stakk ut» passende tømmermengder hver dag, som fikk flyte stille ned mot sorteringslensene på Fetsund. Der ble tømmer som skulle til sagbrukene på Lillestrøm og langs Øyeren sortert fra det som skulle til kjøpere lengre sør med sikte på båtsleping til de nevnte sagbruksmiljøene eller til elveløpet ovenfor Mørkfossen. I år med stor tømmeromsetning kunne svært store mengder tømmer i perioder bli liggende ved attholds- eller beholdningslensa ved Bingen i påvente av sortering ved Fetsund.

Lensa besto av en flytende kjede av tømmerstokker som var lagt på tvers av elveløpet, forankret i rekker av såkalte lensekar. Dette fotografiet er tatt i 1985, som var den siste fløtingssesongen i dette vassdraget. Det var forholdsvis lite tømmer, og lensekarene var i sterkt forfall, for det hadde lenge vært klart at det gikk mot avvikling av tømmertransporten på Norges lengste vassdrag.
Attholdslensa var et flytende stengsel - sammenlenkete tømmerstokker - som var forankret i lensekarene som lå på rekke i elveløpet. Lensekar forekom i mange former og størrelser - de kunne være kvadratiske, rektangulære, trekantete eller tilnærmet ellipseformete - men det var de kvadratiske eller rektangulære det var enklest å bygge. Derfor var det slike det var flest av, også her ved Bingen. De ble konstruert som «tømmerkister» med en del innvendige tverrstokker. Disse hulrommene ble fylt med stein, som også ble lagt oppå tverrstokkene for å presse lensekarene ned mot elvebotnen. Til tross for at elva nedenfor Bingsfossen var bred og stilleflytende kunne likevel presset fra strømmen i vannet og store opphopninger av tømmer ødelegge lensekarene. Flere av dem ble derfor forsøkt beskyttet med plogformete konstruksjoner på motstrøms side. At karene på dette fotografiet fortsatt fungerte etter at tømmerkistene vart bortråtnete skyldtes nok at tømmermengdene - og dermed presset på konstruksjonene - var atskillig redusert i forhold til hva det hadde vært i de første 10-15 åra etter 2. verdenskrig.
Attholdslensa ved Bingen fanget opp tømmer som kom flytende på elva fra skogbygdene i Odalen, Solør og Østerdalen og holdt det tilbake, for deretter å slippe det porsjonsvis videre nedover mot lenseanlegget ved Fetsund, cirka 5-6 kilometer lengre nede i elveløpet. Ved Fetsund ble tømmeret lenge sortert etter kjøpermerker og buntet («soppet») for videre buksering i retning industrien på Lillestrøm eller videre sørover Øyeren. Dette fotografiet ble tatt i 1985, den siste fløtingssesongen i Glomma. Da var det slutt med tømmersorteringa på Fetsund, for alt fløtingsvirket i bakgrunnen på dette bildet skulle sørover på Øyeren og videre nedover vassdraget mot Borregaard-fabrikken i Sarpsborg.

Ved inngangen til året 1984 startet Norsk Skogbruksmuseum arbeidet med det som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Da var det klart at den tradisjonsrike tømmerfløtinga i vassdraget ville bli avviklet i 1985. Museet ønsket derfor å få i gang et dokumentasjonsprosjekt der tømmertransporten på vassdraget skulle ha hovedfokus. Historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som hadde arbeidet ved museet fra 1982, skulle ha hovedansvar for prosjektet. Han tok sikte på å samle et representativt utvalg av løse gjenstander fra fløtinga til museet, han ville dokumentere faste fløtingsinnretninger i vassdraget, ta vare på eldre fotografier og arkivalia, samt samle det han kalte «minne- og tradisjonsmateriale» med tilknytning til Glomma-fløtinga. Særlig museets fotograf, OT Ljøstad, var en trofast samarbeidspartner under arbeidet med prosjektet. Vestheim og Ljøstad reiste mye langs vassdraget i 1984 og 1985, men også i oppryddingsfasen i de par første sesongene etter dette. Glomma fellesfløtingsforening overlot sitt fotoarkiv, som besto av 72 album en del negativmateriale fra ulike deler av vassdraget, til Norsk Skogmuseum. Papirarkivene ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la dem bli liggende i den murte delen av kontorkomplekset Fellesfløtingsforeningen hadde hatt på Fetsund. Der veiledet Øivind Vestheim en del lokale medarbeidere som ble engasjert for å ordne arkivet. Forvaltningen av arkivmaterialet ble etter 1990 overlatt til lensemuseet, som ble etablert på Fetsund dette året. Mange av gjenstandene Vestheim samlet inn til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i forbindelse med prosjektet ble dessverre kjørt direkte på fjernmagasin i Elverum, uten at de ble registrert. Dermed gikk beklageligvis viktig informasjon om proveniens og bruk tapt. Heller ikke de fotografiske opptakene ble tilfredsstillende registrert da de var «ferske». Øivind Vestheim brukte en kassettopptaker som «feltdagbok» under mange av turene langs vassdraget. Bjørn Bækkelund skrev av mange av kassettene etter at han begynte ved museet høsten 1997. Innslagene av tradisjons- og minnemateriale på disse opptakene var få. Prosjekt Glomma skulle opprinnelig vare fra og med 1984 til og med 1988, altså i fem år. Det viste seg imidlertid at oppgavene ble mange, og at arbeidet tok lengre tid enn forutsatt. Øivind Vestheim avsluttet sin del av prosjektet med utgivelsen av boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer» i 1998. Han sluttet for øvrig ved museet like før boka var ferdig. I ettertid har nye medarbeidere ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum gradvis forsøkt å krympe det forvaltningsmessige etterslepet etter Prosjekt Glomma.
