- Tidlig på året 1984 mottok Glomma fellesfløtingsforening et brev fra treforedlingsbedriften Borregaard i Sarpsborg, som var den siste virksomheten som brukte Glommavassdraget som transportåre for tømmer, om at de ville avvikle denne virksomheten i løpet av 1984 og 1985. Som en konsekvens av dette vedtok generalforsamlinga i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening den 26. april 1984 at organisasjonens virksomhet skulle avvikles etter 1985-sesongen, og at organisasjonen skulle oppløses innen utgangen av 1987. Fløtinga opphørte først i den øvre delen av vassdraget. På Osensjøen ble 1984 siste driftssesong. Etter hvert som virksomheten ble avviklet pålå det Fellesfløtingsforeningen - i henhold til vassdragsloven - å foreta opprydding der hvor organisasjonen hadde hatt fysiske installasjoner i og ved vassdraget. Noen anlegg ble fjernet, andre ble solgt til nye eiere, som var villige til å overta ansvaret for dem. Fagmiljøet ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum innså at nedleggingsvedtaket gav dem to sesonger til å dokumentere sluttfasen i en virksomhet som hadde transportert tømmer fra de store innlandsskogene til trelasthandlere, sagbruk, trerforedlingsbedrifter og eksporthavner ved kysten gjennom århundrer. Dokumentasjonsarbeidet skulle omfatte faste fløtingsinnretninger (dammer, forbygninger, lenser, tømmerrenner, tømmertunneler og bygninger), løse gjenstander (håndredskap, båter m.m.), arkivalia, fotografisk materiale, samt tradisjons- og minnemateriale. Tanken var at materialet skulle underkastes vitenskapelig bearbeiding i løpet av prosjektperioden, som skulle gå over 5 år (1984-1988), og at det skulle formidles, både i publikasjoner og utstillinger. Det var amanuensis Øivind Vestheim og fotograf OT Ljøstad som fikk hovedansvar for dette prosjektet. De dokumenterte fløtingsaktiviteter fra land, til vanns og fra lufta med kamera, notatblokk og båndopptaker. Vestheims bok om Glomma-fløtinga, «Fløting gjennom århundrer», kom i 1998. Parallelt med dokumentasjonsprosessen inngikk ledelsen ved Norsk Skogmuseum avtale med Glomma fellesfløtingsforening om overdragelse av Sørlistøa med påstående bygninger samt båter og annet utstyr. Avtalen om dette ble gjort i 1984 - det året dette fotografiet ble tatt - men overdragelsen var ikke endelig før den var godtatt av landbruksnemnda i Åmot og av fylkeslandbruksstyret i Hedmark året etter. Museumsvirksomheten i Sørlistøa ble etablert som et sommeråpent formidlingstilbud fra og med 1989.
