GEORGE GIBSON WINGAARD PETERSEN
------------------------------------------
Second son of Oluf Christian Petersen. Educated at Glasgow Academy and Oxford University.
Volunteered at age 17 as a dispatch rider in the 1st World War with his own motorcycle. They accepted him, but sent him to Oxford to train for aviation. He passed all tests and was comissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps, which later became the Royal Air Force. He was promptly sent over to France to join a fightning unit in 1917. He was taken prisoner and sent to Holtzminden in Germany. His other prisoner included Colonel Lief Robinson, V.C., who shot down the first Zeppelin.
After a year in Holtzmined, the war ended (November 11, 1918). He was released, went back to Scotland, and joined the shipping firm of P. Henderson & Co. After a few years he decided to emigrate to the U.S.A. and join his two brothers. He was called to the U.S. Army for the 2nd World War. On release, he joined the Quigley Company.
He finally retired to Florida. He was not only a great golfer, tennis player and swimmer, but he was a great fisherman. He fished at Palm Beach, Lake Worth, St. Petersburg, the Keys, Lake Okeechobee, and all other points in Florida.
He never recovered from his prison camp life in Germany and was not too well. He had a stroke in 1963 and was in hospitals and nursing homes continously. Finally after a long illness, he died in Boulevard Manor in Boynton Beach, Florida, on August 19, 1969.
