Lokaliteten ligger på en naturlig avgrenset N-vendt terrasse ytterst i Kjeldsvika. Bak, S for terrassen, stiger terrenget bratt langs hele terrassens utstrekning, og N for flaten faller det ned, nedenfor lave forhøyninger på flatens ytterkant mot den lille vika lengst N på Kjeldsvikas V-side. Herfra er det godt utsyn mot N og Ø over Ø deler av Lundevågen og Kjeldsvika, og uten skogvegetasjon har det trolig også vært utsyn mot V forbi dagens A-verkskai og videre til Smalsundet. Terrassen er relativt stor, totalt ca 50 m lang Ø-V. Den V delen er ca 6-8 m bred, mens den Ø delen av flata er bredere, inntil 20 m, samt noe mer småkupert. Det meste ligger ca 7-8 moh. Ytterst mot Ø fantes to lavereliggende flater (ca 5,5-6 moh.) atskilt av en mindre Ø-V-orientert forhøyning, og terrenget stuper bratt ned i Kjeldsvika Ø for disse småflatene. Et steingjerde løper om lag N-S over terrassen. V for dette (hvor lok.id. 11130 er påvist) er det i nyere tid plantet tett med gran, mens vegetasjonen Ø for gjerdet (hvor lok.id. 30484 er påvist) ved undersøkelsestidspunktet var preget av lyng, einerkratt og spredte klynger av varmekjære løvtrær. Det er ellers ingen naturlige skiller mellom de to delene av flaten, så det er naturlig å anse hele terrassen som ett og samme aktivitetsområde med samme lokalitetsnavn; Kjeldsvika I. Grunnet granplantefeltet og store forstyrrelser i V, ble utgravningen konsentrert til den Ø delen. Avtorving ga funn av rydningsrøyser, og det ble tydelig at flaten har vært dyrket med omroting av opprinnelig stratigrafi som følge. Matjordlaget var ca 20-40 cm tykt. Under dette var undergrunnen noe varierende, men i hovedsak grusblandet sand med noe varierende kornstørrelse. I de V deler av det avtorvete området var grunnen til dels svært fuktig og besto av svært finsorterte sand og siltige løsmasser med noe grus. Under avtorving ble det samlet inn en del diagnostisk materiale, men det ble lagt vekt på å fjerne omrotete masser for å påvise evt. strukturer. Enkelte ruter (2x2m) i omrotet jord ble gravd og såldet maskinelt, mens prøveruter i ikke-omrotet undergrunn ga svært få funn. Ca 500-600 kvm ble maskinelt flateavdekket totalt, mens selve utgravingen ble konsentrert til et område på ca 250 kvm på den V-lige delen av Kjeldsvika I. Noen reell funnspredning og konsentrasjoner er derfor ikke mulig å utarbeide på bakgrunn av utgravingsmetodikken, men det syntes som om de neolittiske funnene konsentrerte seg til de Ø-lige delene, mens de V-lige, indre og høyereliggende områdene inneholdt større andel seinmesolittiske funn. 16 nedgravde strukturer ble påvist, i tillegg til 5 rydningsrøyser som trolig er fra nyere tid. Av de nedgravde strukturene er 9 tolket som kokegroper, 2 som ildsteder, 4 som kokegroper/ildsteder og 1 som uviss. Det foreligger tilsammen 6 dateringer fra fem av dem, alle disse er tolket som kokegroper (DF-4120): S4 og S19 er begge datert til eldre jernalder, hhv. 1730±25 BP (TUa-7180) og 1635±30 BP (TUa-7247), S3 og S22 til eldre bronsealder, hhv. 3050±25 BP (TU-7197) og 3030±25 BP (TUa-7182), mens to dateringer fra S10b er fra sein tørkopfase, 7960±45 BP (TUa-7438) og 7675±45 BP (TUa-7248). S10b er en av tre kokegroper som er overleiret av en sandlag etter Tapes-transgresjonen. Lokaliteten viser gjentatte opphold på stedet i mellommesolitikum, seinmesolitikum, tidligneolitikum og mellomneolitikum. Tyngdepunktet ligger trolig i seinmesolitikum, tidlig- og mellomneolitikum. Deretter nye opphold knyttet til kokegroper på stedet i både eldre bronsealder, og siden også i eldre jernalder. Som følge av anvendt gravemetodikk, er mengden funn fra Kjeldsvika I beskjeden, bare ca 3400 enkeltfunn. Blant det littiske materialet er det hele 99,1% flint og 1,3% sekundært bearbeidet.
