Walter Brian Harland var en britisk geolog ved University of Cambridge fra 1948-2003. Han spilte en betydelig rolle i utforskningen av Svalbards geologi, og organiserte mer enn 40 forskningsreiser for Cambridge Spitsbergen Expeditions som senere ble Cambridge Arctic Shelf Programme (CASP).
Harland besøkte Svalbard første gang i 1938. Fra 1965 hadde ekspedisjonene sommerbase i Ny-Ålesund, først i "Brakke 1" fram til 1971. Deretter i ei brakke kalt "Mexico" til 1991. Fra 1991 ble en ny forskningsstasjon bygget til britene, der den ligger idag. I 1972 fikk Harland også bygget et naust som i dag kalles "Salterella", etter den siste båten som fortsatt ligger i naustet. Den første ekspedisjonsbåten het "Collenia" (1961), deretter ble "Posidonia" tatt i bruk i 1992.
Harlands etterfølger Nick Cox tok i 1991 over som stasjonssjef for den britiske forskningsstasjonen i Harlandhuset. Cox deltok fra 1978 i Cambridge Arctic Shelf Programme sine sommerekspedisjoner under ledelse av Harland. Fra 1987 ledet Cox ekspedisjonene.
