Den 20. januar 1782 skjedde det noe dramatisk på Austmo i Hoff i Solør, nemlig en dølgsmålsfødsel. Ei fortvilet ugift, gravid kvinne fødte i skjul og drepte det nyfødte barnet sitt, i håp om at ingen skulle få greie på at hun hadde vært gravid. Slike hendelser var ikke uvanlige på denne tida. Samfunnet øvde en streng kontroll med kvinners seksualitet, og denne kontrollen hadde en brodd nedover i samfunnsformasjonen. Både juridiske og kirkelige samfunnsinstitusjoner reagerte med negative sanksjoner overfor ugifte mødre, som ble straffet både økonomisk og ved stigmatisering. Reaksjonene fikk konsekvenser for livet videre. Tjenestejenter med barn var ikke spesielt attraktiv arbeidskraft, og sjansene for at slike jenter kunne inngå ekteskap med en attraktiv partner var små. Ugifte, gravide kvinner var med andre ord i en krititisk sosial situasjon. Enkelte fortvilte kvinner kom til at det å skjule graviditeten og fødselen, og deretter ta livet av barnet, var en måte å unngå de vanskelighetene et liv som ugift mor innebar.
Hovedpersonen i dramaet på Austmo var Anne Henriksdatter, ei 29 år gammel svensk kvinne. Hun oppgav at hun var født i Dalby sokn, som i dag ligger i Torsby kommune i Värmland. Anne hadde oppholdt seg i Norge i åtte år, de tre siste som tjener på Veltstu Austmo. Der hadde de andre beboerne lagt merke til at hun var blitt tjukkere, og de begynte å lure på om hun var gravid. Gardbukeren på Veltstu Austmo, Gunder Eriksen, gjorde det samfunnseliten forventet av en husbond. Han spurte tjenestejenta si om hun var gravid. Da hun svarte med en benektelse Gunder hadde vanskelig for å tro på, sendte ham bud på prestens medhjelpere. Også de fikk negative svar på spørsmålet om «hun lavede til Barsel». Mistankene hang likevel over den svenske tjenestejenta på Austmo. Husbonden Gunder Eriksen forbød henne å sove i fjøset, som hun hadde pleid å gjøre. Hun skulle ha natteleie i stua, sammen med husbondsfolket og et par andre tjenestejenter. Da hun begynte å kjenne seg dårlig søndag 20. januar, skal hun ifølge sin egen forklaring ha søkt inn på kammerset, hvor ungene på garden pleide å sove. Ettersom dette skjedde på dagtid, var Anne aleine i rommet. Under rettsforhandlingene sa Anne at hun fødte et levende guttebarn i kammerset ved sju-åttetida om kvelden. Umiddelbart etter fødselen presset Anne noen tøystrimler «af sit innnerste Linned» inn i munnen på spedbarnet, slik at ingen skulle høre at det skrek. På den måten skal hun ha kvalt sønnen sin. Deretter sydde Anne liket inn i trekket på ei underdyne, som lå i ei seng i kammerset. Så gikk hun inn i stua og la seg, slik husbonden hadde forlangt. Utpå natta sto hun og ei av de andre tjenestejentene opp og gikk til fjøset. I forbindelse med dette ærendet hevdet Anne at hun bar etterbyrden (morkaka m. m. ) fra fødselen ut av stuebygningen. Den andre tjenestejenta hadde ikke lagt merke til at Anne bar på noe, men det kunne naturligvis kunne tilskrives nattemørket. Både tjenestejenta og husbonden trodde imidlertid at fødselen måtte ha skjedd i et av uthusene, og at det var derfor hustandsmedlemmene i det tilstøtende stuerommet verken hadde hørt den fødende kvinna eller det levendefødte guttebarnet. Gjetningene gikk i retning av fjøset eller i et halmskur, der folka på garden noen dager seinere oppdaget en del blod. Nettopp funnet av blodrestene utløste nye undersøkelser, også andre steder på garden. «En usædvanlig Stank»i kammerset gjorde det natrurlig å lete der, og snart kom liket for en dag i senga. Dermed ble det forhør med bygdelensmannen og rettsak med fogd, to jurister og til sammen 17 vitner. Blant vitnene var barnefaren, en nykonfirmert 18-åring fra nabolaget, som ikke later til å ha vært spesielt ressurssterk. Gjennom rettsprosessene ble Anne Henriksdatters forklaringer gradvis mer tilpasset de indisiene som kom fram gjennom funn på åstedet, obduksjonsrapporten fra regimentskirurgen på Kongsvinger og vitneutsagnene i saken. Etter hvert innrømte Anne Henriksdatter at hun også hadde født og tatt livet av to spedbarn før hun reiste fra hjembygda i Sverige.
Den offentlig oppnevnte forsvareren hadde en vanskelig oppgave, for loven foreskrev strenge straffer for det Anne Henriksdatter hadde gjort. Han viste til at soknepresten hadde gitt henne «et got Skudsmaal for den Tid hun her i Menigheden sig haver opholdet». Forsvareren mente også hennes vilje til i ettertid å innrømme dølgsmålsfødselen måtte være en formildende faktor, og bad retten «indskrænke Straffen saa meget muelig og billig kan være». Dette ønsket gjorde neppe særlig sterkt inntrykk på sorenskriveren og lagrettsmennene. Retten konstaterte at Anne «ikke med Barnet er lovlig omgaaet», og at det som hadde skjedd var en planlagt dølgsmålsfødsel. Den strafferettslige konklusjonen på de juridiske betraktningene i dommen ble slik: «Anne Henrichsdatter bør for hendes Barne-Fødsel i Dølgsmaal sig selv til vel fortient Straf og andre letfærdige og jldesindede Qvindfolk til Exempel, miste sin Hals og Hovedet sættes paa en Stage. » Det endte med andre ord med en vanærende dødsdom.
