«Bombingen.
Etter trefningen på Midtskogen fant myndighetene i Elverum det nødvendig med evakuering av sentrale strøk av Leiret. Elverum var ingen luftvernkrets og hadde ikke stastilskudd til evakuering, luftvern o.l. En nemnd med representanter fra Sanitetsforeningen, Røde Kors og Lotteforeningen skulle ta seg av evakueringen.
Ved plakater ble flyvarslingen kunngjort. Varslingen skjedde ved hjelp av brannvesenets sirener. Og varsel ble gitt etter ordre fra politimester Haavie. Oppfordringen om evakuering ble fulgt av store deler av befolkningen, så allerede tidlig om morgenen den 10. april var det en stadig strøm av folk langs utfartsveiene fra Leiret.
Tidlig om morgenen den 11. april gikk flyalarmen. Det var nok ikke så mange som tok noen nevneverdige hensyn til den, selv om man observerte fly i lav høyde over Leiret. Så hadde da også disse flyene norske kjennemerker. Men på den klare, blå himmelen kunne det observeres noen små, blanke prikker høyt, høyt der oppe. Det var de tyske flyene.
Ca. kl. 11 sto vi midt i Nyveien (Storgata) og myste opp mot flere slike blanke prikker, da det plutselig smalt på Terningmoen. Og enda en gang lød et øredøvende smell, men denne gangen i retning bak sykehuset. Det hele virket liksom så uhyggelig og uvirkelig, og opp i alt dette ulte sirenene av ambulansebiler og brannbiler. Nå fant vi det mer betryggende å trekke oss i ly av husveggene. Men det hendte ikke mer.
Så begynte ryktene å svirre. Terningmoen ble bombet av tyske fly, og en brakke var fullstendig smadret, en person var drept, og mange var såret. Senere fikk vi også vite at elverumsmannen Magne Rekstad hadde fått revet av seg den ene armen og fikk senere gå gjennom livet med en arm. Men hvorfor et lite tømmerhus bak sykehuset (Grundt-huset) fikk en fulltreffer, var det ingen som kunne forstå. En ting ble vi da klar over, at tyskernes bomber ikke alltid traff der de skulle.
Etter dette evakuerte alle som ikke måtte være i Leiret, og i alle hytter og hus rundt Leiret tok beboerne imot folk som ba om husrom. Kammers, stuer og kjøkken ble fylt, og den maten som fantes ble delt på beste måte. Det var enestående hvordan de flyktende menneskene ble mottatt. Således var det på det vesle småbruket Stavåsen nesten 50 personer natt til 12. april.
I Leiret og på Vestad var det travel militær aktivitet. Det var jo et stort antall unge menn som hadde møtt frem til mobilisering. Mobiliseringen ble ledet fra hovedkontoret på Elverum lærerhøgskole. Dette ble en vanskelig oppgave, for så snart en avdeling var klar og skulle stille opp, gikk flyalarmen, og alle måtte søke den dekning de kunne finne.
Mellom kl. 16.00 og 17.00 kom hovedangrepet. Flyene om i formasjoner på tre og tre og slapp sine bomber i serier, som da falt i linje etter hverandre over store områder. Bombene veide ca. 50 kg ov var delvis fylt med brennbar olje, slik at det ved sprengning spredte seg en brennende olje over store områder, som antente de gamle, ærverdige trehusene i Leiret. Også den ærverdige bjørkealleeen langs Nyveien (Storgata) ble antent. Flyene tok en liten sving utenom Leiret og kom så tilbake for atter å slippe sin dødbringende last. Bombingen ble konsentrert om Leirets sentrum, men Vestad ble heller ikke spart. En bombe falt på et tømmeropplag på Elverum Dampsag og Høvleri, andre på ulike steder på Vestad. To personer hadde søkt tilflukt i Glommen Bruk, og ble drept da en bombe traff denne bygningen. Elverum Meieri fikk en treff, og i kommunens potetkjeller (Kornmagasinet) ble 700 sekker hvetemel spredt for alle vinder. Men det var Leirets sentrum som fikk føle hovedtyngden av angrepet.
Hva som egentlig foregikk, forsto vel ikke vi, som satt fjetret i en kjeller. Her var stemningen så uvirkelig at den knapt kan beskrives. Noen gråt, noen ba, noen sang, og andre igjen satt helt stive, stirrende og lyttende til drønn fra eksploderende bomber, knitring av mitraljøser, klirring av knust glass og smell fra luftvernskyts. Det var nemlig plassert ut enkelte luftvernkanoner i Leiret, men disse hadde liten effekt på flyene, da det viste seg at de manglet vitale deler, som f. eks. høydemålere o.l.
Da det hele endelig stilnet av, og vi kunne beskue det som hadde skjedd, var hele sentrum et eneste flammehav, og midt inne i røk og varme kunne vi se restene av de husene som for en time siden hadde stått der så staute og vakre. Men disse restene raste med bulder og brak sammen, og høye, enslige piper ruvet i røken uten noen hus under. Det var så varmt at vi ikke kom nærmere enn Lunkebrua fra nord, og øverst på Slakteribakken, eller ved Kirkestua fra sør. Men vi kunne se varme og røk stige opp fra ruinene fra alle de kjente bygningene: Slakteriet, Østlendingen (Manhattan), Gaarderbakken, Lensmannsgården, Carl Amundsen, O. Pedersen, Elvarheim, Hallegården, Borgen, Biografen (kinoen), Ekren, Kreditkassen, Hotel Central m.m., og ovenfor Slakteriet var Hummeldalen snart borte.
Det var ikke mye brannvesenet kunne gjøre i denne situasjonen, men de greide merkelig nok å stoppe brannen i Sterudgården (nå Triangelgården) og Lund (Røhnegården). Posthusgården var også bombet, men det lykkes å hindre total ødeleggelse.
Det antas at det ble sluppet vel 150 bomber over Elverum, og splinter fra disse kunne man finne i trær og husvegger alle steder rundt bombeområdet. Således gikk det en serie over Parken og Markedsplassen (Torvet) som knuste ruter og vrengte av dører i det utbombede området rundt Østmohjørnet. Dessverre viste det seg at det fantes de som var kaldblodige nok til å benytte denne anledningen til å fornye sin garderobe og supplere sine vareforsyninger fra forretninger og også privatboliger. Disse varer og verdisaker ble selvsagt aldri betalt.
De fleste ofre på ett sted ble funnet på Elverum slakteri. Slakteriet var et forholdsvis nytt betongbygg, og folk følte seg trygge og søkte tilflukt i denne kjelleren. Men dessverre var det i Slakteriet den største tragedien hendte. Bygningen fikk en fulltreffer og raste delvis sammen. I alt 13 døde ble registrert i denne kjelleren.»
Lokalbefolkningen i Elverum inspiserer ruinene etter den tyske bombinga av kommunesenteret Leiret 11. april 1940. At Elverum ble rammet av krigen på denne måten skyldtes at Stortinget, regjeringen, kronprinsen og kongen flyktet nordover da den tyske invasjonen av hovedstaden Oslo skjedde om morgenen 9. april. Etter et møte i Festiviteten på Hamar flykten de nevnte myndighetsrepresentantene videre til Elverum folkehøgskole seinere på dagen den 9. april. Tyske militære forsøkte ved en dristig manøver å innhente dem, men ble stanset etter en trefning ved Midtskogen, noen få kilometer vest for tilfluktsstedet. Den 10. april nådde den tyske sendemannen Curt Bräuer Elverum med sitt krav til konge og regjering om at Norge skulle kapitulere, og at Vidkunn Quisling skulle utnevnes til ny statsminister. Kongen var umiddelbart negativ, og regjeringen avviste også etter hvert det tyske kravet. Okkupasjonsmaktens reaksjon på dette ble bombing av Elverum sentrum, noe som la mye av bebyggelsen i ruiner. Dette fotografiet er tatt i det som hadde vært St. Olavsgate, der to menn med ryggsekker betraktet de omfattende skadene. Murveggene og pipene på kommunehuset Elvarheim sto, til tross for de påkjenningene trykket fra bombing og påfølgende brann hadde utløst.

I forbindelse med lanseringa av filmen «Kongens nei» i 2016 var det et betydelig fokus på gjenlevende som hadde opplevd den dramatiske tyske bombinga av Elverum 11. april 1940. En av dem var Marie Horst Eggen. Hun ble et av «tidsvitnene» i de utstillingsmessige markeringene som Glomdalsmuseet og Anno museum produserte i forbindelse med filkmprosjektet. Dette og en del andre private motiver fra Marie Horst Eggens private album ble innlånt i forbindelse med prosjektet. Hun samtykket i at museet kunne skanne en del av motivene, både med sikte på utstillingsbruk og visning på nettstedet «Digitalt museum».
