I boka «Mjøsens fisker og fiskerier» (1917) skriver fiskeribiologen Hartvig Huitfeldt-Kaas (1867-1941) blant annet følgende om garnfisket etter lågåsild i Mjøsa tidlig på 1900-tallet:
«Den bedste fisketid er juli-august; mindre fangst gjøres gjerne i juni og september, undertiden faaes ogsaa litt i oktober. …
Den dybde hvori lagesildgarnene utsættes, er gjerne 16-30 m. og hyppigst vistnok 20-24 m. Undtagelsesvis sætttes de ogsaa dypere like ned til 120 m.s dybde. I begyndelsen af fisketiden sættes de sedvanlig grundest, og sommeren utover stadig dypere og dypere.
Garnene har almindelig en længde av 50-60 alen (31,40-37,68 m.) og en høide av ca. 1 m., mens maskevidden som regel er 17 mm. mellem knuterne i vaat tilstand, og sjeldnere op til 20 mm. I de senere aar brukes mest bomuldsgarn.
Naar garnene utsættes, bindes gjerne flere (fra 4 op til 20, og vistnok oftest 8-10 st.) sammen til et «garnsæt». For at garnene ikke skal føres bort fra sin plads av strømmen, som i Mjøsen ofte kan være meget sterk, fæstes en større sten (paa ca. 2 kg.) i hver av garnsættets ender. Til disse stener er videre garnlinene fæstet, hvilke holdes oppe i vandflaten av «vækja», en korsformet træflære der oftest er merket med erierens forbokstaver, og undertiden malt med en let iøinefaldende farve for lettere at gjenfindes.
Sedvanlig utsættes garnene ved middagstid (kl. 12-1) og tages op tidlig om morgenen, saa fiskeren kan naa at være kl. 10 om morgenen paa tovet i Hamar med fisken. Undertiden brukes dobbelt sæt av garn, i hvilket tilfælde fiskeren gjerne utsætter det ene sæt umiddelbart efter at han har tat det andet op. I den allerbedste fisketid blir garnene utsat og optrukket 2 ganger i døgnet. Lagesilden gaar nemlig – i motsætning til de aller fleste andre ferskvandsfisker – paa garnene ogsaa midt paa lyse dagen. Dette skal efter sigende særlig finde sted i begyndelsen av fisketiden.
Aar efter aar utsættes garnene nøiagtig paa den samme pladser, hvis beliggenhet er nøiagtig bestemt ved sigtepunkter fra land. Tiltrods for at bunden paa de fleste garnpladser er meget jevn og ensartet, mener fiskerne at det er av den største betydning at faa garnene ut paa de gamle, længe benyttede fiskepladser. Aarsaken hertil skal være, at disse ved langvarig bruk er blit renset for kvist og lignende løse gjenstande, som av vind og strøm er ført dit hen, idet lagesilden antages at ha en utpræget forkjærlighet for at opholde sig de hvor bunden paa denne maate er «oprensket». ….
Garnfisket efter lagesild drives i Mjøsen paa en forholdsvis meget indskrænket lokalitet, nemlig næsten blot omkring Helgeøen og utfor Neslandet. Den overveiende del av fangsten gjøres fra gaarder paa Helgeøen. Dernæst har fiskerierne paa Nes størst betydning. Videre fiskes enkelte aar ubetydelig av 1 eller et par fiskere paa Toten. Endelig drives der (dette gjælder de første aar efter 1900) litt lagesildfiske av et par fiskere i Bundefjorden, 1 paa Hamar og 1 i Stange. I den øvrige del av Mjøsen drives ikke garnfiske efter lagesild om sommeren. …»
SubjectLeif Fossum (1900-1978) fra Nes på Hedmarken greier lågåsildgarn på en pinne utenfor båthuset på eiendommen Slåtten (opprinnelig husmannsplassen Slåttsveen under garden Østre By). Fossum hadde busserull på overkroppen og sixpencelue på hodet, der han sto og tredde garnmaskene inn på ei nettstikke av asketre. Under sto det et digert trefat. Dette er sannsynligvis det garnet Leif Fossum overlot til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i 1969 (SJF.01995). Garnet skal ha vært 2,45 meter langt og 1,15 meter høyt. Maskevidden oppgis å være 1,7 centimeter. Garnet hadde 25 teglsteinssøkker og 15 jernringsøkker, mens overtelna hadde 29 flyteelementer av handskåret kork. Det er nærliggende å tenke seg at dette garnet kan ha tilhørt en tidligere bruker på Slåtten, Olaf Slaatten (f. 1871), som ifølge folketellinga i 1910 «Driver en del fiske i Mjøsen». Fiskeribiologen Hartvig Huitfeldt-Kaas’ (1867-1941) beskrivelse av garnfisket etter lågåsild (Coregonus albula) i Mjøsa tidlig på 1900-tallet er gjengitt under fanen «Opplysninger».
Dette fotografiet er ett av flere som sannsynligvis ble tatt i forbindelse med at konservator Tore Fossum fra Norsk Skogbruksmuseum var på eiendommen Slåtten for å hente et fiskegarn som eieren, Leif Fossum, ville gi til museet i 1969 - jfr. SJF.01995.
