Ferskvannsbiologen Hartvig Huitfeldt-Kaas (1867-1941) skrev følgende om morten og «sørennefisket» med kuper (ruser) i nedre del av Svartelva i boka «Mjøsens fisker og fiskerier» (1917):
«I Svartelven og Akersviken ved Hamar og ved osen av Lena elv paa Toten kaldes gjerne den gytende mort «sørenne», ellers er «mort» det almindelige i Mjøstraktene anvendte navn paa denne fiskeart. Ved Lillehammer og den aller øverste del av Mjøsen benævnes morten og Leuciscus grislagine, hvilke ikke holdes at fra hianden som egne arter, med fællesnavnet «guldbust». Morten er utbredt i stor mængde overalt langs Mjøsens strande og findes særlig talrig i indsjøens grunde partier.
At opgi en almindelig størrelse for den i Mjøsen forekommende mort er vanskelig – engang faaes en mængde ¼ marks (75 gr.) fisker, en anden gang ½ marks (125 gr.) og en tredie gang kanske, og det gaar vel sjeldnere paa, mest fiske paa 1 mark (250 gr.). I det hele tat ser man morten er meget tilbøielig til at gaa i stim, hvori alle fisker er av næsten ens størrelse. Det største antal mort som fiskes i Mjøsen er vistnok under 250 gr. og under en længde av 18 cm. I gytetiden eller kort forut for denne faaes ogsaa et betydelig antal større fisker, f. eks. i Svartelven, i Akersviken og utenfor Hamar; men fisker paa en vegt av 1/2 kg. og derover (med en længde av 33 cm. og derover) er dog at betragte som rene sjeldenheter. …
I Svartelven ved Hamar, formodentlig Mjøsmortens vigtigste gyteplads, regner man at denne fiskeart pleier gaa op for at gyte omkr. 25. mai; enkelte aar sker dette dog ikke før i de første dager av juni. Enkelte gytefærdige hanfisker træffer man dog langt tidligere, saaledes fandt jeg i 1903 nogen mort, fisket ved Hamar, med ridende melke allerede i tiden melle, 21. og 30. april. ….
Naar heggeblomsten begynder at springe ut gaar sørennen op i Svartelven, det er et gammelt merke som aldrig slaar feil. Er heggen fuldt utsprungen, er hele fisket allerede forbi; ti det varer almindelig kun 2 dager. …
I Svartelven fiskes den væsentlige del av sørennen i ruser eller som de paa stedet kaldes kuper, som opstilles paa strømhaarde steder eller i smaa stryk i de saakaldte «fiskebygninger» (kaldes ogsaa «fiskedammer»), hvilke i konstruktion meget minder om teinelagegne i Laagen, hvis teiner svarer til fiskebygningens kuper. Forskjellen er væsentlig den at fiskebygningene (hvori ogsaa fanges har, vedebuk og laue) er opstillet i langt svakere strøm eller stryk end teinelagene, da disse fiskearter bedst gaar i fangstindretninger, som staar i relativt svak strøm. Likesom ved teinlagene søker man ved fiskebygningene ved hjælp av gjærder eller gitterverk av træ og ved stensætninger at lede den opstigende fisk ind mot kupernes aapninger.
Selve kuperne har en længde av 150-180 cm. og indgangsrammene har en høide av 65 á 70 cm. Kupernes skelet bestaar av pilekvister som er overtrukket enten med garn eller i de senere tider vistnok hyppigst med netting, som har en maskevidde av 1,5 – 3 cm., eftersom kuperne tænkes anvendt til fangst av laue, mort, harr eller vederbuk.
I Svartelven er der flere gaarder som fra gammel tid av har ret til «fiskebygning», saaledes helt nede i Akersviken: Aker gaard, længere oppe Sandaker, Sinnerud og Sannerud; men ikke alle pladser for fisebygninger blir nu benyttet. I de senere aar har saaledes oftest kun 3 været i bruk.
I Svartelven kan sørennen stige op til den nye Kuruddam ret nedenfor O gaard.»
SubjectHåkon Berge, Birger Børresen og Martinus Hovie tømmer ei kupe (ruse) fra fiskebygningen garden Nedre Kåterud hadde på Fossbakken, like ved Svartelvas utløp i Åkersvika og Mjøsa. På dette tidspunktet hadde fiskebygningen støpte sidevanger. Halvparten av elveløpet mellom disse vangene var stengt ved hjelp av ei dør, i den andre halvdelen var det plassert to rektangulære kuper, som var lagd av trelekter som var trukket med netting. Når fiskebygningen var i bruk sto kupene med åpningene på motstrøms side, og skulle altså fange fisk som var på oppgang i elva. Under tømming ble enden med fangståpningen ble løftet noe opp, samtidig som man åpnet ei luke i motsatt ende, slik at fisken skled ned på et plastflak på bakken.
