I boka «Innlandsfiske» (118:1979) skrev Åsmund Eknæs følgende om fangst og tørking av mort på Finnskogen:
«Folket på Finnskogen i Hedmark måtte tidlegare ta så mykje som mogleg av maten frå skogen og sjøen, og sidan morten var så talrik, kom han til å stå sentralt i kosthaldet. I gytetida, «mortleiken», midt i mai går store mengder mort opp i elvar og bekker. Vanlegvis varar mortleiken berre tre-fire dagar i kvar elv, men det skil litt når han startar i dei ulike elvane, så til saman kunne fisket vara i meir enn ei veke.
Reiskapane var not, garn og ruse. Elva eller fiskeplassane avgjorde kva for reiskap som høvde best. Dei stengde heile elveløpet med nota, garnet eller rusa, og så drog dei eit godt stykke oppover og jaga fisken mot reiskapen ved å slå med lange rajer eller kaste stein i vatnet. Etter ei jaging let dei elva roe seg, slik at morten kunne få høve til å kome opp att. Dei fiska vanlegvis ein gong om kvelden og ein gong om morgonen. Når elva stod full av mort, måtte dette fisket gi store fangstar. Vi høyrer om notfangstar på meir enn 11 tønner.
Kringom på gardane fekk dei ei hektisk tid når dei skulle stelle istand fisken før han vart øydelagd. Til vanleg salta dei ned morten og tørka han. Flas, innmar og hovud vart fjerna. Etter tre døgn stakk dei fisken inn på pinnar og hengde han til tørk på ein husvegg. Når han var heilt gjennomtørka, la de han på ein tørr stad for vidare lagring.»

Fiskeren hadde maget morten, skåret av hodene og stukket fiskene inn på trespiler, som skulle monteres på en soleksponert husvegg med den åpne buksida ut. Slik skulle morten henge i sol og vind noen døgn, før den kunne legges på et mindre lys- og varmeeksponert sted for langtidslagring. På Finnskogen var mort en matressurs som var lett tilgjengelig en kort periode da den gikk opp i elver og bekker for å gyte i månedsskiftet mai-juni.
Det var viktig å kunne drøye de forholdsvis store mortfangstene som ble tatt i de tre-fire hektiske dagene gytinga, «mortleiken», foregikk over en lengre konsumperiode, og da var tørking en mye brukt konserveringsmetode. Først ble flass, mageinnhold og hode fjernet. Deretter ble fisken lagt i saltlake et par døgn, før den ble stukket inn på pinner og hengt til tørk på en husvegg. Når morten var godt lufttørket i sol og vind kunne den tas inn og langtidslagres i et tørt rom. Når den seinere skulle spises måtte den legges i bløt noen timer før den kunne kokes. Fra gammelt av skal fisken som ble fanget gjennomgående ha vært større enn den vi ser på dette bildet. Svein Gammeltorp anså seg for å være den siste som fanget mort som matfisk på Finnskogen, Han antok at redusert beskatning av bestanden var hovedårsaken til at morten han fanget da dette bildet ble tatt gjennomgående var mindre enn tidligere.
Morten er en karpefisk med en østlig utbredelse. I Norge lever den i ferskvann i den sørøstre delen av landet, fra Numedalslågen i vest til Osensjøen og Drevsjø i nord. Det skal også ha vært satt ut mort i vann i Trøndelag. I Øst-Europa er mort en vanlig matfisk, men i Norge har den ikke vært særlig ettertraktet. Hartvig Huitfeldt-Kaas skriver (i boka «Mjøsens fisker og fiskerier» [1917, s. 189-190]) om forholdene i Mjøstraktene, der det var og er mye mort, at «det er næsten blot fattigfolk som vil spise den. De som først en gang har vænnet sig til dens eiendommelige smal finder den dog noksaa god, sier de, og salter ned til eget brug hvad de maatte overkomme.» På Hedmarken ble mortfangstene også brukt til hønsefôr, og som agn på rever (lineredskap) som ble brukt til å fange andre, mer ettertraktete fiskeslag. På Finnskogen var det altså tradisjon for å spise mort, men da dette fotografiet ble tatt, i 1976 var avhengigheten av mat fra lokal natur mindre. Den morten som tørkes på dette fotografiet skulle brukes som hundefôr.
