Filologen Alf Torp, som utgav nynorsk etymologisk ordbok i 1919, antydet at ordet kattise kunne ha østlige røtter. Etter å ha konstatert at kattise var en betegnelse på ei «fiskeruse af stænger og kvister» eller en «indretning i elv av spiler og vidjer til at tvinge fisk i ruse», fastslo han at formen «katiza» var registrert i middelaldersvensk, og at ordet fortsatt fantes i svenske dialekter i former som «Kattisa, katsa og kätsa». Fra Finland refererte Torp til former som «katiska, katitsa og katsy». I russisk hadde han registrert ordet «kotsy», som han satte i forbindelse med det gammelslaviske «kotisu». Etymologen pekte også på et mulig slektskap med det nordtyske «kettser (kettsher, kescher)», som betydde håv, og det engelske «catcher». Torp fant altså beslektete ord i språk både i øst, sør og sørvest for det norske språkområdet. Den kjente etymolgen hadde to hypoteser om det egentlige opphavet: Det kunne være et germansk ord, som hadde kommet inn i slaviske språk som lånord, eller det kunne være et gammelt slavisk ord som var avledet av «kata», som skal ha betydd kammer eller forrådskammer.
I 1980 tok en representant for Leksikografisk institutt ved Universitetet i Oslo kontakt med Norsk Skogbruksmuseum. Vedkommende hadde fått tilsendt fotostatkopier av en serie med kartotekkort, hvorav enkelte var stemplet «NMA», som antakelig var en forkortelse for Norsk målførearkiv. Ett av dem hadde et udatert, men antakelig svært gammelt sitat. Tegnene som var brukt var ikke de samme som finnes på et moderne PC-tastatur, men teksten lød omtrent som følger: «De jold e scläus trebås öu, som stô å fazzà stött de va kattisa». Nederst til høyre på kartotekkortet stor det «Ar Ø», som sannsynligvis var en forkortelse for Aremark i Østfold.
I midten av 1970-åra ble det oppsatt ei liste over 19 lokaliteter der det er registrert kattiser, navn der kattise inngår eller tradisjoner om slike innretninger. De fleste kattisene som nevnes der er fra Østfold, men det listes også opp referanser til Oslo, Akershus, Hedmark, Oppland, Buskerud og en enslig lokalitet i Rogaland. Siden liste ble utarbeidet har museet fått minst to meldinger om kattiser. Det ene «funnet» var det etnologen Kari Telste som gjorde. Hun oppdaget at ordet katttise var brukt i referatet fra en rettssak fra Synneren ved Norderhov kirke i 1673. Telste bemerker at det faktum at ordet og fenomenet var kjent på Ringerike så tidlig, kan så tvil om riktigheten av en hypotese mange har hatt, nemlig at den skal ha kommet til området med finneinnvandringa. På Ringerike var den konsentrert til Krokskogen.
Etter at Åsmund Eknæs hadde omtalt kattisefunnet fra Valmannsundet i Eidskog i en kort artikkel i Norsk Skogbruksmuseums årbok nr. 6 (1967-1971) under tittelen «Katisse – en gammel faststående fiskeinnretning» reagerte filologen Bjørn Eithun. Han mente at det dreide seg om et hunnkjønnsord som burde staves «kattise», altså med to t-er og en s. Synspunktet ble fremmet med referanser til uttalen av stedsnavn der kattise var navneledd og til eldre skriftformer. Museets personale fant Eithuns argumentasjon overbevisende, og har seinere forsøkt å holde seg til den stavemåten han gikk inn for.
Våren 2021 ble det gjort arkeologiske undersøkelser av kattiserester ved Nord-Mesna i Ringsaker kommune i Hedmark. C14-dateringer av staurer eller spiler som var stukket ned i bunnsedimentene for å etablere fangstrom antydet at denne kattisa var fra seinmiddelalderen - altså et langt tidligere tidspunkt enn finneinnvandringa til skogdistriktene på Østlandet på 1600-tallet.

Her ble det ved eksepsjonelt lav vannstanden tidlig på våren 1969 oppdaget en del pinner som var stukket tett i tett ned i mudderet, og de hadde åpenbart stått der lenge. Konservator Tore Fossum fra Norsk Skogbruksmuseum ble påkalt, og han rykket ut sammen med magistergradsstudent Åsmund Eknæs, som hadde sommerjobb på museet. De konstaterte at dette måtte være restene av ei kattise. Fotografiet er tatt ved lavvann, i august, på et sted som ellers i året er fullstendig oversvømt av vann.
Kattise er et tradisjonelt innstrengingsredskap for fangst av fisk. Slike fangstinnretninger ble etablert på steder der det var grunt og der det var tjukke slamlag på botnen. På slike steder var det mulig å plassere trespiler tett i tett, slik at de skapte et fangstrom med traktformet innløp. Etter at fisken hadde svømt inn, var det vanskelig for den å finne den smale spalta som kunne ha ført dem ut igjen. Dermed var den fanget innenfor et svært begrenset vannvolum, der det må ha vært overkommelig for folk å hente den opp. Denne kattisa i Valmannsundet i Eidskog skal ha vært lagd av kløvde trespiler som var 2-5 centimeter brede, 1-2 centimeter tjukke og 40-80 centimeter lange, hvorav cirka 25 centimeter var stukket ned i botnslammet. Eknæs beskrev fangstrommet i kattisa ved Valmannsundet som kringleformet.
Det finnes en historisk beskrivelse av kattisefisket, formulert av presten Hans Strøm (1726-1797), som i 1784 fikk publisert sin topografiske beskrivelse av Eiker i Buskerud, der han på dette tidspunktet hadde vært prest i fem år. I «Physisk-Oeconomisk Beskrivelse over Eger Præstegield» beskrives ikke bare den pinnestrukturen som Eknæs registrerte ved Valmannsundet, men også et gjerde av riskvister som skulle lede fisken mot inngangen til kattisa:
«De andre Fiskerier, som skee i Elven og Vandene med sætte-Garn, Va (Vod), Ruse og deslige, vil jeg ikke opholde mig med, da de overalt ere brugelige og velkiendte. Derimod bruges i det store og fiskerige Vand Ekeren endeel mindre bekiendte, af hvilke jeg kun vil nævne det saakaldte Katis Fiske, som anlægges i smaa Bugter, og bestaar deri, at man tvert over en saadan Bygt sætter et Gierde af sammenflettede Riis-Qviste, som giør en Aabning i Midten, af 1 Alens Vidde, der er giort som en Bøiel, omgiven med smale og bøielige Pinde, hvis Spidse gaae sammen indad, som paa en Aal-Tene. Naar nu Giedden om Foraaret søger op i slige Bugter (som man siger, for at æde af Vand-Græsset) og gaaer ind i Aabningen, bliver den staaende indenfor Gierdet i Bugten, indtil Vandet udtørres om Sommeren, da man kan tage den op nærmest paa det tørre.» Her fungerte kattisa med andre ord som et slags forrådskammer med levende, fersk fisk, som ble hentet til husholdningene i lavvannsperioden i den tørreste sommertida.
