Dommen vart anka, men høgsterett i København stadfesta dødsdommen.
ENGLISH:
The house was originally built in the summer of 1666 and was moved to a new site in 1931. This was the first house to be relocated to the museum. The house served as a courthouse for Hol and Ål from 1671 to 1738, when Ål and Hol had a joint court until 1877. It was later furnished by Kristen Aanstad (1746–1832) from Gudbrandsdalen in the latter half of the 18th century. He is the one who painted the furniture with traditional rose decorations.“Dumme Sevat”
Sevat Rønningen, called “Dumme Sevat” (meaning “Dumb Sevat”), was deaf or mute. He and his mother lived in the kleven (small storage room) in the courthouse until 1922. Sevat traveled around with a hurdy-gurdy, playing for people, earning his living that way. He communicated with others by carrying a slate and chalk, which he used to write messages.Fange-Liv
The most well-known court case in the courthouse was when Fange-Liv, Liv Engebretsdotter Arnegard (born around 1705), was sentenced to death on July 14, 1730, for having taken the life of her child. She had not told anyone she was pregnant because she was too ashamed. A few days before giving birth, she left Arnegard in Vats, where she had lived with her parents, to go to her cousin at Myking in Kvinnegardslia. Like other farm girls, she slept in the cowshed, and one morning she was found there with a lifeless child wrapped in a headscarf. The fact that she had not called for help was interpreted as meaning she intended to kill the baby, although she explained that she had fainted on the ladder, fallen to the floor, and remained unconscious.Liv was imprisoned at Øvre-Myro in Hol (the old sheriff’s farm still stands there), but after three years she was caught in Røldal and returned to jail. During the years she was on the run, she had another child. The sentence was appealed, but the Supreme Court in Copenhagen upheld the death penalty. Liv was executed shortly thereafter at “Verpebakken” and was probably buried there. This was the last court case held in the courthouse.
